A DORADE BOX (also known as a dorade vent, cowl vent, or collector box) is a marine ventilation device used on boats and yachts. It allows fresh air to flow into the cabin, engine room, or below-deck areas while preventing rainwater, sea spray, or waves from entering.
How It WorksThe design features a low box mounted on the deck with internal baffles that create chambers. A rotatable cowl (horn-shaped scoop) on top faces into the wind to capture air, directing it down through the box and into the boat via a pipe or opening. Any water entering the cowl hits the baffles, collects at the bottom, and drains out through small weep holes (limber holes) onto the deck-while air flows freely over the baffles and below.
