We use them to heat shrink 12-volt automotive electrical connections from 18 gauge to 2 gauge. This particular torch works best from 18 gauge to 10 gauge. Since we do not use the other components in the kit, we would have interest in purchasing the butane torch only.

This unit does the rope cutting, but also electrical soldering. I nearly burn my fingers a little. But it can be used ANYWHERE, so that makes it fine. And I have been using now for 5 years or so, and that is amazing for stuff like this. Probably not the cheapest, but defo worth the extra.

Summary: Its a durable unit for sure. Starts up quick, controls are great, everything is great with one exception. It just doesn't get hot enough and consumes loads of butane. I had a little RadioShack (I'm old) butane iron for many moons, it used a fraction of the butane and got HOT FAST. Obviously due to physics, a larger iron with heavier materials, is going to trade off heat for size/weight and durability. Alas the old faithful RadioShack iron that came over on the Mayflower; finally had enough of my abuse. Experience with other PowerProbe products led me to this as a replacement. Have had great experience with all PowerProbe products. Overall it will get the job done with no dramas up to about 14AWG, beyond that and you will be watching paint dry waiting for this thing to get hot enough. Who is this for? If you bust smaller cheapo butane irons, and don't need to do much work past 14AWG, this thing is a tank and will serve you well. Who is this NOT for? Need to burn in gt;14AWG frequently and patience is not your strongest virtue, look elsewhere.

I had 1 of these that lasted about 6 years and then the igniter failed. Bought a newer one that lasted 3 months and had another igniter failure. I will never buy another one of these. Works great when not broken.
