This tool seems like it will do the job. I haven't had the opportunity to use it yet.

Use this product to remove oil filters....do not use them to put the new one on! You probably shouldn't be using more torque than your hand to install a new one though. This tool will crimple the filter if it has to apply enough torque to loosen the filter. If you use this tool in that context it should work perfectly.

I'm amongst those who have a car that affords difficult, quite limited clearance to the oil filter (in my case, a 2006 Honda CR-V). Those damn cup type filter wrenches will only slip/rotate over the filter when you're trying to remove it, as there's no way to apply enough downward force on the filter to keep the wrench from pushing back up, and slipping. Infuriatingly annoying. This Lisle 63600, in contrast, grips the hell out of the filter, and removes even the most egregiously over-torqued units with ease. Be advised, however, that this filter wrench is so strong that it will crush the filter while removing it, at least for filters that were badly overtightened. Of course, this hardly matters when you're removing an old filter slated for disposal, anyway. The only thing about this wrench that I wish was of better quality is the tension spring installed thereon. It's pretty small and weak, and I can see it failing before too long. Otherwise though, this wrench is a life saver-- I had my engine drained, only to find I couldn't get the $ old filter off. So I overnight ordered this wrench, and in 30 seconds had that bloody overtightened filter off. No thanks to the neophyte technician who torqued the hell out of the old filter when installing it in the first place. !! Earth to oil changers: You only need hand-tighten an oil filter!
