Causes: Arts & Culture, Arts Education

Mission: P. S. ARTS is dedicated to improving the lives of children by providing high-quality arts education to California’s underserved public schools and communities.

Results: P. S. ARTS engages outside evaluators to provide non-biased quantitative program evaluation. Most recently, in June 2014, renowned arts researcher Dr. James Catterall completed a two-year study on the impact of P. S. ARTS programs on students’ development of “creative thinking, behavior, and motivation in the arts, sciences, writing, and social problem-solving. ” The study included 300 4th and 5th grade students participating in the P. S. ARTS rotational classroom studio program. Findings show participation in P. S. ARTS programs is associated with significant gains in students’ ability to: express complex ideas accurately and clearly, solve problems creatively, collaborate and empathize with others, and take initiative to produce ideas, designs, and products that are novel and valuable.

Target demographics: P. S. ARTS ensures high-quality, sustainable arts education for children in under-resourced public schools.

Direct beneficiaries per year: We have grown from serving 285 students in one school to over 25,000 students in 50 underserved schools across Los Angeles County and California’s Central Valley; P. S. ARTS also serves nearly 10,000 students and families through our Community Engagement programs.

Geographic areas served: 59 schools throughout Southern and Central California; the participating school districts include Compton Unified, Culver City Unified School District, Greenfield Union, Hawthorne, Inglewood Unified, Lawndale Elementary, Los Angeles Unified, Lost Hills, Reef-Sunset Unified, San Bernadino City Unified, Santa Monica-Malibu, Stockton Unified, Wasco Union, and Wiseburn Elementary

Programs: P. S. ARTS programs align with our mission by applying best practices in education and youth development, particularly with regard to transforming chronically low-performing schools and improving civic, school, and career outcomes for participants. Below is a list of our program offerings:
• Classroom Studio Programs: P. S. ARTS provides in-school arts education programs once a week, every week for the entire school year. Our music, theater, and visual arts classes are integrated into the school day.
• Extended Learning Programs: P. S. ARTS provides after-school and summer arts programs through the Inside Out Community Arts theater program (IOCA) and our high school program Teen Media Initiative.
• Community Engagement Programs: P. S. ARTS aims to provide crucial arts experiences for the entire family. We facilitate free community outreach events such as our Family Art Nights, the TakePART Festival, and various family art days held throughout the school year.
