Mission: The organization develops, implements and provides culturally oriented programs and services that address and promote the educational, social and economic welfare of african americans and individuals of african descent.
Programs: Ki ecocenter - held forums and conversations on education, job creation, social justice and public safety. Over the course of the year more than 400 individuals came together to discuss, look at the impact on themselves/community and explore strategies for addressing these issues. Shared information and different perspectives on a variety of issues such as food deserts, social justice and the need for bold and courageous leadership via our blogs, facebook, twitter and e-newsletters, which has a combined circulation of more than 1900 people.
ki numedia - provided young adults entrepreneurial education and engagement providing graphic design, web development, social media management and videography for a fee to support program and organization. Interned five young adults.
ki community school - provided individualized education and local relevance in a multi-aged small classroom setting to ten students.
urban agriculture - maintained focus on exposing and educating community about sustainable food production. Through our acquaponics operation (aquaponics is a system that creates an environment for fish and crops to grow simultaneously and symbiotically), urban gardening and composting more than 500 individuals provided information, education and/or experiences in using these approaches to produce healthy sustainable food.
express yourself rain barrels - launched new social enterprise to teach and engage both youth and adults in manufacturing and marketing rain barrels and fund enterprise. Also emphasized water conservation and recycling as earth-friendly sustainable practices. The long-term vision is job creation in the community and contributing to the local economy. Ten to fifteen youth and adults gained skills in rain barrel production. Through our email distribution more than 1900 exposed to information on the use of rain barrels for water conservation. Through our tours more than 200 exposed to the production process.
ecofashion bags - launched new social enterprise providing entrepreneurial education and experiences to intergenerational team of ten youth and adults. With a focus on recycling, repurposed materials are used to make fashionable tote bags that are sold to fund the program.
ki dorm - created residential dorm providing room and board for students who are interning with ki as volunteers. Seven young adults provided living quarters and meals over the course of the year.
