I model in small scales (1:450, 1:220) and need accurate measurements, this is just right and not overly expensive.

These General 142 dial calipers are very handy 6 calipers, one rotation of the dial per inch, dial marked in 1/64ths and 0.01. (I never use the metric markings.) I have several -- one in my top tool drawer, one in my carry around tool bag, one by my stash of thinner materials. I probably use one of mine every 15 minutes when woodworking. So they get used A LOT.What I like about the 142 calipers: They are plastic. 100 plastic. They are super light. And I don't care if my hands are wet or damp. They are easy to set to zero. Close the jaws, and adjust the bezel. You are done. They read 1/64 fractions. Perfect for sizing small drills and thicknessing materials. They are one dial rotation/inch. For what I do, that is faster and easier than 0.1 or 0.2 per rotation. They are tough. No need to handle carefully, or worry if you drop them. Which I sometimes do :( While I don't recommend it, they can be taken apart and reassembled if needed.Limitations:-- You won't get 0.001 accuracy, because they don't have it. Stainless quality calipers for that.-- They are not cheap, at about $30. Electronic calipers are getting cheaper, these are not.-- They do wear out, but it takes a lot. If you wear one out, it earned its retirement :)-- Most likely failure (for me) has been breaking off the depth probe. Have to be careful.I just picked up another set to replace a well worn caliper -- hence the review -- and did not even think about a different design. Right there, that says a lot. Thanks for reading, and have fun in the shop!

They work well enough to take accurate measurements, and I successful took them on an airplane. Which I could not do with metal calipers.

I find these useful for quick measurements around the shop whether it is shaft diameters or metal thicknessor checking dimensions on parts. These can be very helpful when ordering parts to get the correct dimensions for bearings and such.

Have used these for decades. Have an expensive SS for special use but that spends most of its time in its case. The General is priced so no need for special treatment. Only problem is that often misplaced so bought two.

Been looking for calipers like these, no battery and does basic metric and standard. Everytime i go to use my battery powered ones they are dead. These solve that issue.

I have the "metric dial" version. I was looking for a "beater" caliper that would just be sitting around, but a step-up from the typical $8 calipers. First thing I noticed is that the dial is labeled as "0.1 mm", except that shows the fraction of a centimeter (0.01m) between centimeter marks, and, presumably, the smallest gradations on the dial would be 0.1cm. Also, there is a great deal of backlash in the gear driving the dial, so, depending on which direction you are moving the slide, the error is almost 1 gradation. So, this makes the apparent accuracy of the caliper much less than the $8 ones I often get with a vernier scale (no backlash there). So, for $32, it is hardly worth purchasing. Instead of sending it back, my intern turned it into a x-mas tree ornament after putting the year on it and getting the other interns to sign the back, increasing the value tremendously.

Lost a star because it does not have the conversion table on the back--decimal to fractions of an inch which the origional version had.
