It's a nice quality product. Yes cast iron is susceptible to rust, but if you care for it properly then it won't be an issue. Also the comments about the black rubbing off and exploding the inner layer is normal with cast iron. Just reseason it again and it'll be as good as new.

Worked great fro crushing the pills I need to feed to my dog each day. Easy to wipe clean. No need to stick in a dishwasher which many people said was a problem on many mortars because the glued on bases would come off. Don't know about this one but great for my purposes.
