Mission: Our mission is to provide free literacy instruction to adults who want to secure a better future for themselves, their children and their community by learning to read, write and speak English.
Results: Headline from the Albuquerque Journal July 25: "Low Literacy Linked to New Mexico's Poverty. ” First paragraph: “There is an inextricable link between poverty and literacy – particularly between child poverty and literacy, according to education experts. And for many New Mexicans, the relationship is generational. ” Some sobering statistics: Overall, New Mexico’s literacy rate is 49th in the nation. Childhood literacy rate is 50th. In Albuquerque, 55% of adults have at risk reading skills or cannot perform tasks that require reading. Ethos Literacy provides free literacy tutoring to adults who primarily read below the 6th grade level and free language tutoring to immigrants who have extremely limited English language skills. Our work is like throwing a pebble in a pond. The effects ripple outward. Since 2009, Ethos Literacy has provided free tutoring to more than 1,500 adults: that’s 1,500 pebbles thrown into the pond with ripples touching children, the economy, food security, housing stability, health, civic engagement, gender equality and social inclusion.
