I absolutely love these oil lamps. I have 3 Dietz lamps, the Blizzard, The Wizard, and now this Comet. Absolutely love it. The paint is impeccable, the lever function needed a bit of tweaking but got it to sit just right. I am In love with this lamp.. Only thing is, don't fill it above half or it will leak from where the side air intake tubes attach.

I wasn't aware how small it was going to be, but it's a decent size for lighting a small porch or reading at the table when the lights go out.No leaking problems so far. The reservoir cap was very tight when I first got it, needed some elbow grease get it off the first time but after that it was fine. The lever for lifting the globe/ lighting the wick was kind of stiff at first as well, but that also loosened up with a little use.All in all, a decent little lantern. Do yourself a favor and read up/ watch some videos on this style of cold blast lantern, and the proper way to set the wick, etc, for the most efficient, cleanest light

Reviews have reported leaks along the base and users have responded it's the result of over-filling, but my comet leaks and I only filled it 1/3 full (50 mL). I put masking tape along the bottom rim, which discolors in contact with oil, and it's clear the oil is coming from the bottom seam of the lantern and not dribbling from the top. The leak is slight, I intend to fill the seam with JB weld and continue using the lantern. It functions well enough at producing light and heat with no smoke, and it came with some wick already installed. The construction is rough, the joints have gaps and the paint scratches off along the moving parts (when raising the glass). Don't pay a premium for the Dietz brand if you find a cheaper off-brand alternative.

Purchased to have a compact/packable lantern for small area lighting. Bear in mind that if you want light over a large area, the Dietz 5/8 and 7/8 inch wick models put out 2 and approaching 3 times the candlepower of these (with the much larger size to accommodate it). Due to the design and burner configuration of these, the light output of them seems to be equal to or more than the generic 1/2 inch wick lanterns from the box stores that are significantly larger. Pictured is a Comet between a generic 1/2 inch wick big box lantern and a Dietz 76 (all burning Florasense lamp oil) to show size and light comparison. The Comet will approach the brightness of the 1/2 inch wick 76 which in itself is brighter than the generic in spite of the same wick size and compact size. Also pictured is a size comparison line up showing a generic lantern, Comet, Dietz 76, Dietz 30, Dietz 2000, and Dietz Air Pilot to show scale of the various models. My Comet was received in good condition with only a slight tweaking of one of the globe wires needed to hold the globe more securely. Don't overfill them or they will leak, trim the wick cleanly flat with the burner, burn them outside for several hours at first, and you should be good to go. If you intend to pack them or transport them less than upright, or shaken much, empty the oil back into a fuel bottle as none of these types of lanterns are fully sealed at the top of the font. If you overfill them, tip them over, or turn them upside down and shake them, rest assured any lantern or lamp will leak fuel.

I liked it because of the size but when I put in the oil it started to leak. Very big mess.
