I bought one of these from a tool truck more than 10 years ago as the Ford and Mazda 2.0 and 2.3L engines became more common. They issued a TSB that using strap wrenches or pliers could damage the plastic filter housing and create an oil leak. So, knowing I would be servicing a lot more of those at my job of the time, I bought it.<br /><br />I've tried the stamped steel tools from other makers in the same size, they being to slip and round off on the extra tight filters. This one does not do so.<br /><br />Happily, I've also found this tool to work great on a variety of VWs, which is exactly what I've been working on almost exclusively for the last 6 years. The tool works just as good now as it did when I first got it over 10 years ago. Assenmacher makes quality tools.<br /><br />So, this will fit a variety of VW filters. The older 2.0L 8V engines, the transversely mounted 1.8T engines that don't use the larger filter specified for the Passat application, the ALH, BEW and BHW code TDI engines from the 2000s. Fits the 5 cylinder filter housings as well as the spin-on filter the 2008-2014 or so TSI engines use. The latest generation of TSIs have reverted to a cartridge filter, does not work on those.<br /><br />Also happens to work on a variety of Mercedes cars as well as many here have pointed out. This is generally the best tool for all these applications. I've tried a few others, borrowed different types from co-workers and friends when mine was not available (left it at home, or I'm doing work at home and mine is left at work...) and this one fits better and has simply endured the test of time.

Excellent tool, especially when trying to get the oil filter housing open that first time. I had two other oil filter wrenches that I use for traditional oil filters, and neither would work. This opened up the oil filter housing on my 2015 MB GLK right up. My only complaint is that there was a little bit of play or space between the sides of the wrench and the filter house cap, which did result in a little bit of re-shaping of the plastic filter house lid.
