Kind of a let down here. I used these transfer screws to mark out bolt holes on a hub I machined out of A36 mild carbon steel. All of the screws used at that point had their tip flatten out against the mild steel after only a very light thump from a mallet. They might survive in brass or aluminum but died miserably in mild steel. The far left punch in the picture is what they look like when new. The two to the right is what one hit does to them in mild steel

I have several sets of these in the most common sizes I use. The larger screws are definitely more durable and probably better made than the small ones. I have a 1/4-20 set, and would NOT use them to transfer onto a steel part without first applying a good coat of Dykem or similar layout fluid. Be gentle, or you will round off the pointed tip. I've used them to locate threaded holes from my milling machine onto the aluminum spars for mounting DRO scales, and they really are a life saver.

The machining is poor, I can definitely see why some reviews say it breaks in the hole. Seems to be cast rather than machined. That said, it's cheap and worked for me.

As good as a center punch, close enough for clearance of a bolt but not for precise location. They have their place but dont depend on them for accuracy.

Over all these transfer screws do well enough - they lack the hardness to really give you a "good" dimple to work with on things like 1018 carbon steel (even with the scale removed) For things like aluminum , brass and wood they work great. If I were looking for something to get me by , or give an "alright" reference then these work fine. For any serious work you're better off finding some of the older hardened steel transfers screws in this price range if you're on a budget.

If you do any fabrication work at all, you NEED a set of transfer screws to duplicate broken parts. Solid product at a great price.
