The opaque blue sump is made of reinforced polypropylene for strength and resistance to chemicals, and the black cap is made of high-flow polypropylene (HFPP) for stiffness. The black cap has 1” female National Pipe Thread Taper (NPT) threaded input and output connections and a nitrile butadiene rubber (Buna-N) O-ring to ensure a watertight seal. A pressure relief button on the inlet side of the cap releases pressure in the housing for changing filter cartridges. The housing can be used with a 10” x 4-1/2” filter cartridge (sold separately). It has an initial pressure drop of 1 pound per square inch (psi) at a flow rate of 15 gallons per minute (gpm), a maximum operating pressure of 100 psi, and a maximum operating temperature of 100 degrees F (37.8 degrees C). This filter housing meets National Sanitation Foundation/American National Standards Institute (NSF/ANSI) standard 42 for quality assurance, and is for use in various high-flow applications, including residential drinking water filtration, food service, and irrigation, among others.SpecificationsFilter cartridge size (H x W) (sold separately) 10 x 4-1/2 inches (254 x 114 mm)Initial pressure drop at 15 gpm 1 psiMaximum temperature 100 degrees F (37.8 degrees C)Maximum pressure 100 psiMaximum dimensions (H x W) 13-1/8 x 7-1/4 inches (333 x 184 mm)Materials and structural integrity certification NSF/ANSI standard 42H is height, the vertical distance from lowest to highest point; W is width, the horizontal distance from left to right; D is depth, the horizontal distance from front to back.Water filters remove undesirable particles, chemicals, and microorganisms from water by means of a semipermeable barrier, adsorption, or biological processes. This filter was installed in an irrigation system that's fed from a well. It filters any rust from the water that's used in a greenhouse. It's good practice to put a pressure gage before and after a filter or strainer. The gage after will tell you when the filter element will need changed

So I read that these leak and are nothing but issues. But I couldnt resist due to the price compared to other brands. I bought 6 of the 4.5x10 versions and figured people just werent really that knowledgeable on pluming. Let me tell you they definitely leak. The lower portion that holds the filter has a very small indent thats supposed to hold the o-ring and the head unit where the o-ring seals against is not flat finished so the basic supplied o-ring really need to be squeezed super super tight inorder to get it to seal. Also the lip is not substantial enough to hold the o-ring in place so you must be very careful. One came with silicon grease so I applied it to all the orings to help hold them in place. even then you may find for the first few days its leak free to later find your basement floor covered in water because it decided to leak again. Im going to try a silicone type o-ring (softer material) and see if it seals the imperfect surface better. The filter assembly is only rated for 75psi and 100psi max. My system is 55psi from the well and 75 psi from the internal pump. In order to tighten them I had one guy hold the fixture while I used a 30 ratchet to tighten it on TIGHT AS I COULD. As of now the leaks have stopped but I dont trust it.Pro; definitely made of solid material and looks as though theres a spot for a pressure gauge if you drill and tap it.

I've been using this system for 5yrs. During this last deep freeze, it busted, thus I replaced it. I was not impressed with the O-ring as it seemed just a bit too large. (Possibly stretched out). It took me 7 tryst before it seated properly with no leaks.

Works fine. You have to use the little tube of grease that came with it on the rubber seal (just a thin coat) so that it doesn't “bunch” the rubber up, causing it to leak.

Update 10/12/2017:
I figured out what was wrong. There was a UPC barcode label stuck under the threads. My only issue with the unit is that the threaded in/out fittings aren't uniform. I was able to screw the fitting further into one side than the other.

Update 10/12/2017:
Something odd is going on. Doing some research, the filter for this housing should be 9 3/4" long. But my measuring tape is showing 10" long. How is this possible? This is probably why my housing is leaking! The filter I bought from Pentek is TOO LONG!

Small leaks around threaded in/out fittings. I'm working to fix the leaks. In order to stop major leaking from where the blue housing threads into the black top, I had to use a TON of silicone. Applying a 'small amount' on the o-ring' created a flood. I had to fill the trough where the o-ring sits with silicone and push the o-ring down into the bed of silicone. Im still trying to figure out if this is normal from other buyers.
I tried several different methods. 1) small amount of silicone, 2) hand tightened, 3) used wrench to tighten... all led to major leaks. The only way to stop it from leaking was to apply a TON of silicone.

I have no clue how other buyers were able to get a tight seal by only using 'small amounts' of silicone.

See attached image for the directional spray of water on the wall prior to using more silicone. Ill update this review if I can get all leaks to stop.

My experience is that you normally wrap teflon tape around threads 2-3 times to ensure a leak free connection in plumbing. I tried that with this filter and it leaked a lot at both of the pipe connections. I wound up putting over 10 wraps of teflon tape around the threads and now it only has a very slight leak on one side. The leak at the other side stopped. These plastic threads have some significant problem because I can't get a water tight seal at the pipe connection. I can't tighten it any more because the fittings are screwed all the way in to the filter. Maybe I'm supposed to use 20 wraps of teflon tape? Also, the holes at the top to mount it in the optional bracket are not threaded, so I had to thread those holes to accept the bolts that mount it to the optional bracket. Good thing I had a tap and die set. It does filter the water though, so I'll give it 3 stars. You just have to leave a bucket under it to catch the drips.

Good filter, volume is excellent, but I'm giving only 4 stars as this needs the wrench to keep it from leaking at the seal.... it should be included!

Add a wrench for a few dollars more.
