Causes: Education, Job Training, Two-Year Colleges

Mission: Our mission is to close the Opportunity Divide by ensuring that young adults gain the skills, experiences, and support that will empower them to reach their potential through careers and higher education.

Results: From an initial cohort of 22 students in Boston, the Year Up program has grown to serve more than 4,000 students per year in metropolitan areas across the country—including Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Phoenix, New York City, San Francisco, and more. In 2019,89% of our graduates were employed and/or enrolled in school within four months of Year Up program completion. Employed graduates earned an average starting wage of $21.43/hour, equivalent to more than $42,000/year. Year Up’s long-term impact was also validated in 2018 by a federal randomized controlled trial (RCT) –the “gold standard” of evaluation – called PACE: Pathways for Advancing Careers and Education. PACE demonstrated a 53% wage gain for Year Up participants compared to a control group—a trend that continued (40% higher wages) at two years post-program. Our graduates are climbing the professional ladder, earning salaries that offer financial security, and making an impact in the communities where they live and work. Their outcomes underscore that they have immense talent, and when they build and hone market-validated skills and experiences through our program, they thrive. By championing their immediate and ongoing success, we are ensuring the growth of a prosperous and inclusive economy wherein everyone is granted their chance to pursue their dreams

Target demographics: close the Opportunity Divide and promote the growth of an inclusive talent marketplace and prosperous economy for all.

Direct beneficiaries per year: Nearly 4,200 young adults seeking economic opportunity and 250+ corporate partners seeking talent.

Geographic areas served: partnership with employers, academic institutions, and community-based organizations across the country

Programs: our one-year, evidence-based workforce development program, where students engage in classroom and experiential, work-based learning that is designed to empower them with the skills required for the 21st century workplace. As a result, alumni are poised to secure meaningful careers with family sustaining wages immediately upon graduation. We also work directly with employers to serve as an advisor on adopting equitable talent management practices. Through this work, we ensure equitable access to economic opportunity, bring talented young adults and industry-leading companies together, and provide a strategic source of talent to America’s largest and best-known employers.
