I like this opener. I do plan to varnish the handle. It may have sealer on it now but it feels like bare wood. The manufacturer probably designed it this way because the handle really provides a great grip. The handle does not detract from the opener in any way, I think it will look nice for a longer time with a coat of light varnish on the handle. I also ran it through my knife sharpener a few times so that it will cut envelopes and packing tape more easily. Again, personal preference. It works very well right out of the box. I expect this opener to last a long time. It is well worth the price.

Nice looking letter opener, and mostly does the job, but it could be sharper. I have had it for 2-3 years, and even when new, it would often tear an envelope, rather than slice it open. But, maybe that's because sharper would be a liability issue. Still easier than using fingers to cleanly open envelopes.

The two things that would make it five stars instead of four. 1. if the wood on the handle was smoother 2. if the edges of the metal were less sharp This is the closest thing I could find to the letter opener my parents had when I was growing up. The wood on the handle is not necessarily rough, but it is not necessarily smooth either. The metal has a bit of sharpness to the edge. In my opinion, that isn't necessary. The shape and material would be enough to open envelopes without giving it an edge.

I needed a new letter opener and this one is perfect. The blade is not sharp so it will not cut your fingers. It is easy to hold and it cuts envelopes perfectly.
