The timer has an incredibly small screw to hold the cover of the battery area. I used several different tools to try and open it, and finally just broke the cover off. This problem occurs with the big time timer, too.

Lots of fun using this little timer. You twist the knob and a little poly red fills the clock. When time is up, it can either beep or not.
