Well, it's a piece of reasonably tough closed-cell foam. At a foam store you'll pay a couple of bucks per square foot for this stuff, so this is a pretty spectacular price. On the other hand, it works well and will probably last forever.

these are useful, one side is more flexible and works well on rounded areas, while the harder side is better for flat, straight surfaces. They work best in combination with a hard block and one of these, starting with the hard block.

Very flexible and works great for areas with lots of angles. I actually use both sides of the block as they are different materials and flex differently.
