Mission: Global Sanctuary for Elephants exists to create vast safe spaces for captive elephants, where they are able to heal physically and emotionally. There are elephants around the world in need of sanctuary, but too few places exist to be able to care for even a fraction of them. GSE is creating a framework that will oversee sanctuaries to be built in areas of need worldwide. We work to educate as many as possible about the suffering of elephants in captivity

Results: In 2016, Global Sanctuary for Elephants built their pilot project, Elephant Sanctuary Brazil, the first and only elephant sanctuary in Latin America, in response to the growing need for assistance to captive elephants in South America. Situated on 2,800 acres of diverse property in the municipality of Chapada dos Guimarães, it has offered homes to nine adult female Asian elephants, to date. The sanctuary continues to expand and there are plans to bring additional elephants, both male and female, Asian and African. Elephants who have been given access to the more natural environment and specialized medical care at our sanctuary can recover or see improvement in instances of severe weight loss, joint and foot issues, bouts of colic, and other forms of extreme physical, psychological, and emotional trauma, and many once-solitary animals have built healthy relationships with other elephants.

Direct beneficiaries per year: Currently, 7 rescued female Asian elephants and a varying number of local species monitored through a rehabilitation and release program. There are plans to add 3 female African elephants and one male Asian elephant in the coming year.

Geographic areas served: Elephant Sanctuary Brazil serves the entire continent of South America. Global Elephant Sanctuary’s mission is to expand the reach of our organization to other countries and continents.

Programs: Global Elephant Sanctuary seeks to assist elephants in need, across the world. Through Elephant Sanctuary Brazil, we are able to focus on providing a safe and healthy habitat for the growing number of elephants displaced by ongoing bans on performing animals across South America.
