The athletes and foodies in the Clif kitchen have crafted a whole new kind of energy bar. Clif Nut Butter Filled Energy Bar brings together two great energy foods - a delicious, creamy nut butter inside an organic energy bar - to deliver sustained energy.
Back in 1991 Gary Erickson decided to develop an energy bar as an alternative to the Powerbars that he literally couldn't choke down on a recent bike ride through the Sierras.
"Bike racers never really complained about the taste and texture of Powerbars, " he said. "We just accepted it as a bitter pill we had to swallow in order to perform."
But Erickson grew up baking croissants and cookies with his mom, and he felt that there must be a better way. His first task was to start researching the ingredients of his competition.
"I realized that the energy bar I was eating used highly processed ingredients, " he said. "I wanted something better. I wanted a nutritional profile that was similar to Powerbars that used natural ingredients and tasted as good as my mom's cookies."
To this day, Erickson's company adheres to that goal. Every new Clif Bar product is designed to taste great while providing healthy, protein-packed energy. When they launched Luna Bars, specifically for women, they had no idea how successful that formula could be within specific niche markets. They now have Kit's Organic Bars, Mojo Bars, ZBar Protein Bars designed for the nutritional needs of growing kids, and a new line of organic Nut Butter Filled Bars.
"What we really love about the nut-filled bars is that we're taking two great energy sources - a protein bar and nut butter - and putting them together." said Dan Hinkle, VP of Clif Bar Brands. "Together they make a great source of healthy fat that many athletes are using to fuel their bodies more efficiently. The fat and protein found in nut butters combined with the nutrients of an energy bar help reduce the bar's glycemic index and slow digestion for a more prolonged energy release."
In April of 2000, Erickson passed up an offer of $120 million for his company. Today, Clif Bar Brands is an independent, employee-owned company that is driven by the values and beliefs that Erickson instilled from the very beginning - values that go beyond short-term profit.
