My son usually wears a small. He fits in this but it is tight I like it that way because I feel it protects him better but the way the closure is he will only get a season out of it. I would buy up a size if you want it to last more than a season since you can tighten it. The quality is great and the pads seem to have held up so far. Son is 55lbs and 47 inches tall
