Azure Market Organic Black Butte Chickpeas also known as garbanzo beans are an heirloom variety of the chickpea with a darker color, smaller size, and slightly firmer texture. They have a smoky, nutty, slightly sweet flavor that makes a versatile addition to any chickpea dish while adding a creative flair to your table! Try serving black hummus or add them to salads or Mediterannean platters for a fun twist! Chickpeas are an excellent source of protein, calcium, iron, and B vitamins.
Garbanzos are believed to have been first cultivated around 5000 BC in Mesopotamia and are a staple in Indian and Mediterranean dishes. They can be boiled, fried, roasted, and ground into a paste or a flour and are an excellent form of energy and nutrients.
Did you know that if you see a what looks like a white seed inside your bag of chickpeas that it is actually the inside of a chickpea that has just cracked open? These black chickpeas are creamy white on the inside!

Presoak 1 cup of garbanzo beans in 4 cups of water overnight or for 8-10 hours. Drain and discard soaking water. Bring 6 cups of water to a rolling boil in a large pot. Add the soaked beans, reduce heat, let simmer for 35 min. When done check with a fork to see if soft enough, drain and cool, ready to serve or use in recipes.
