I had to curl it and use a breaker bar in order to remove the original one. After that everything was easier. I followed a video online on how to change it and I stopped having cloudy water. GE water heater 40 gallons.

I was shocked at how corroded the old rod was after 5 years. I needed an impact wrench to get it loose. You might too. Hope this holds up a little better.

Anode rods are a consumable part of a water heater tank. I recently learned that these rods keep the water from eating the tank itself by being sacrificial. Not sure why they come in so many diameters (as the hole go in is standard 3/4") but I guess you look up your particular tank and buy the appropriate diameter. It would also help to find the original length. Keep in mind you may have to cut to length.I consider magnesium to be an upgrade to aluminum. I'm sure there are some circumstances when aluminum would be better but not in most cases. Foremost, I don't think we should have aluminum in our water.First, shut off cold water supply to tank and turn on a hot faucet to relieve pressure. To remove,I used an impact wrench with a 1-1/16th socket. As others have noted the old one will be in there pretty good and using breaker bar may result in the entire tank rotating. Mine is 11 years old and most of the rod was eaten up. I had some trouble removing it as the lower half had broken away and was dangling. Luckily it is attached to a steel core which made retrieval possible. There as quite a bit of white crud on the rod that worked it's way loose in removing it so I flushed the tank.Install is easier than removal. I used teflon tape to seal. Some say you don't need it because the threads are tapered and some say you need to use tape and sealant. Go with your gut. I can tell you the original had been taped. Neither will affect proper grounding as the threads will cut through and make proper contact with the tank. Turn the water back on and work out air from pipes and check for leaks. Now you are good for another 5-6 years, according to what I've read.

Seemed to be a good replacement for the rod in our Steibel Eltron Accelera heat pump water heater. I had to cut a few inches off the end because the water heater is so tall that there isn't much headroom to fit the rod in. Next time maybe I'll get one of those rods that are in several pieces like a chain so they can fit in tight spaces. But this should last me a year or more, so I'm not going to worry about that now. Replace those anode rods, folks! Best way to extend the life of your water heater!

It fit the water heater after I sawed it shorter by about a foot to clear the basement ceiling. That's by design. Time will tell whether it works any better than the aluminum anode it replaced. Clearly, if your water heater is more than 7 years old you should check this anode and replace if needed.

Piece of cake to replace the anode in my GE GeoSpring hybrid water heater. I couldn't get the old one out using a 20" breaker bar, but my air impact wrench had no problem with it. I had to cut off 2" with a hacksaw for it to fit. The old one was pretty well eaten away after 5 years of use. I didn't even know an electric water heater had a sacrificial anode. I'm glad I found out in time before my expensive water heater could be damaged. Thanks to the other reviewers...they were very helpful with instructions on how to do this.

I bought the house 2012 and didn't change the my heaters magnesium anode rod until 2015 when I got bad smell in the water. It had been smelling too bad and couldn't recognize first when I searched on the internet. The best thing needs to replace every 2 years that saying internet. I replaced and never smell again now time to replace again because has been 2 years. Good product.

This is longer than the rod that came out of my water heater, which is good because it will last longer. It was a little TOO long; it hit the ceiling before it would go in. It would probably require more than an 8 ft ceiling to just drop in. Fortunately my water heater is plumbed with flexible tubing, so I was able to tip it over enough to slide the rod in. It would also have been an option to cut a little bit off of the rod with a hacksaw.Go ahead and stick a hose on that little spigot thingy and drain all the crud out of your tank while you're at it. Only bad thing is if you keep replacing the anode rod, you'll never get to experience plumbing in a new water heater.

Installed into a Rheem gas hot water heater. It was too long (knew this was likely when I ordered it), cut off the excess with a hack saw. As other reviewers have pointed out it had sticker labels on the metal which did not peel off. A scotchbrite green pad and some water scrubbed that off no problem.
