I just finish playing around with it and I got it to do what I wanted. I praise and shouting is a praise but how loud is a shout?? Where is the line. Well I did research and a shout is any sound higher than 80dba or decibals the unti sound it measured in. So I took the meter put it to my mouth and shout BUT put the setting on MAX and what it does is it listening for the HIGHEST sound so when I shout it was loud but it was 87dba and that's what I wanted but you have to put the setting on MAX. When you turn it on .. the numbers keep moving .. no press the button on the right until it says MAX on the screen, then measure your sound ... it's going to measure the loudest it got or the peak of the sound and it will give you one FIXED number.

This thing seems to work good. I am no expert on sound, but wanted it to see the difference between two sets of speakers. The unit seems to be well constructed and so far has held up nicely. Although I don't use it regularly, it is a great tool to have when setting up your surround sound system. The backlight is also a great touch, since it is dark in some of these theaters.

I've had this for quite awhile now, and use it frequently to see what type of db our ATVs are running. We haven't been given a ticket yet, so it must be fairly accurate.

Item performs as advertised. Very happy with its precision as it duplicated results when compared with a NIST calibrated unit. It would be nice if the data could be downloaded into an Excel spreadsheet or equivalent DAQ software.

I have had 3 of the Mini Digital Sound Level Meters by CEM. One of the Mini’s met its demise by way of my puppy who thought it for her but was still working after it got a good chewing. And another that was flatten by a car when the meter fell of my truck. The CEM meter short of being abused is a fantastic meter.

I needed a meter for noise documentation in a lawsuit so I wanted something that could be calibrated so I got the Reed ST-8050 Sound Level Meter which can be calibrated. What I discovered upon performing side by side tests of both meters was I found the Mini to perform almost exactly as the ST-805. The response time and readings were identical. The most difference I saw was maybe a 1 db level lower in the Mini. I placed them in front of the TV and raised the volume up and down very quickly with different music channels and the results were again almost identical. And I tested them against the noise source I was documenting 800 yards away and they performed worked the same

But I did see a significant difference in the response in the lower dB readings between the Mini’s. One would read as low at 15 dB where one would only do 24 dB and latest one I have is the slowest to respond and it may have like a drop 20 dB before it begins a slow rise to get to the level of sound it is measuring. But since my ST-805 stopped working after a single drop I can’t compare the third Mini’s slower max reading to see if it is continues to accurate.
