A little disappointed, but does an adequate job. Doesn't pass the paper cut test with flying colors. Followed the instructions to the tee. I guess the performance is proportional to the price.

Great sharpener. Does a good job and is easy to use once you get the hang of it, but there is a bit of a learning curve. My only issue is the plastic storage box. Lansky made a good product, then put it in the worst, cheapest, most poorly-made storage box on the planet. They must have sent malnourished interns to the four corners of the earth to find this worthless scrap of cheap malformed plastic. It won't even close because of how poorly molded it is. A wad of wet toilet paper would have been more effective. I'm sure I can find something better in the dumpster behind the dollar store. Even the throw-away plastic containers from our local Chinese take-out are better made and more durable than this thing. It would have been a five-star review if the storage box was useful.

Great system, would recommend their pedestal mount for this, the super sapphire hone, the leather stropping hone, and a bar of Red Jewler's Polishing Rouge, gets my knives to the point of taking hairs off of my arm with no effort. They should have included as I stated in another review the mount, but it's not too expensive so I won't complain too much.

Was as expected but the bottle of oil was opened and spilled all over the case.

Generally speaking this is a good sharpening system although it can be a bit tedious. There is something of a learning curve in order to get the best results. I would strongly suggest that folks look at some of the YouTube instructional videos prior to purchasing the Lansky Pro Sharpening System for pointers on how to best use it.

-The Good
The Lansky is easily the best budget sharpening system on the market and easily in the top 3 regardless of price. The Lansky is a controlled angle system that removes much of the guesswork from sharpening. When used correctly, with some stropping, the Lansky can make an edge sharp enough to cut a single hanging hair. It is also safer, making it much harder to scratch up your blades finish if you are inexperienced in sharpening.

-The Bad
The problem is, several components that should have been included by default (Universal Mount/C-Clamp & Leather Strops With Compound), are sold separately even if you buy the more expensive professional system. The other problem is quality. All the plastic portions feel weak and brittle, the metal is not even deburred in places. While it has not happened to me yet, given any amount of hard use I can easily see the plastic portion of the hones fracturing. If the system were $20 overall that would be fine, but with the necessary accessories the final price is at least 3x that amount. The final and biggest problem with the Lansky is that certain blade shapes and sizes are impossible to use with the clamp. They will fit in the clamp, but you won't have enough clearance and you will just end up shaving down the clamp itself. This becomes really prominent if you try to use the lowest angle setting or are sharpening larger blades. You can always freehand it with any knife and hone, but that defeats almost the whole purpose behind the system.

-Final Verdict
Despite my complaints, this system is totally worth it. It is almost a necessity if you have trouble freehand sharpening. It helps your muscle memory, making freehanding more intuitive and when everything works the results are great. If your collection is mostly straight angles and pocket sized knives you most likely won't have any of the clearance problems I mentioned either.

I works, but not the be-all, end-all of sharpening like some believe. Not gonna give you that professional edge you get from taking it to, well, a professional sharpener. It also takes a little practice, but it is a lot easier to learn than a whetstone. Instructions are nearly worthless - search YouTube.

Not worth the money IMHO unless you need to sharpen a lot of knives all the time.

This works pretty good on knives that you aren't going to be to picky on. If you do any research on the subject, you will find that especially longer knives develop quite a large amount of variation from end to end on the grind angle from using this. This being stated, it really doesn't matter if you don't care. Gets knives sharp, fairly quick, and that's all I care about.

It still takes some care and attention to get good results. Not for absolute beginners. It is, however, quite wonderful. I brought to life a 150 year old knife and re-sharpened both my santoku and a friends pocket knife with ease.

this is definitely for the pro's. I admit it is an awesome system but you have to take time to sharpen correctly and it can be very dangerous so be careful

I had my old Lansky sharpening kit for many years, and it worked great. I dropped the box and wound up breaking a couple of the stones. I checked the cost of replacing the broken stones, and it turns out that I was able to purchase a new one for less than the cost of three stones.

The box that the system comes in is the same as the one I purchased years ago. It is nicely made to hold all the parts of the system in place nicely, all the stones have their own slots to fit in, as well as the oil bottle and blade holder. The upper part of the box holds the rods that attach to the stones, and these are held in place very, very well.

If there is one downside to this system, it is the tabs that hold the box closed. It requires a bit of force to get the tabs to close, and in my opinion, do not really do a good job of keeping the box closed. I use a small strap to keep things tight. It is this reason I gave the system only four stars.
