Her story is co-authored by her uncle and father, written from the father\'s viewpoint. It begins with the family\'s fear of having an unhealthy child due to the mother contracting German Measles. The family\'s fears are realized many months after the birth of their daughter, when they begin to suspect she cannot hear. As the family tries to provide for their Deaf little girl, they are urged to talk to her and treat her like a normal\" child. They are advised that oralism is the only way to go and that one day Lynn will learn to speak. The book has been updated with an epilogue by Lynn Spradley, the Deaf child who is now grown. She reflects on deafness, education, and her struggle for communication, adding a distinctly new dimension to the original text. This is the book that made all the difference for our family thirty-six years ago. Highly recommended. Am glad to see it's still available. Bought another copy just days ago to show to the students in the sign language class I am teaching.

This is an ok book. I had to read it in college and found it a little boring. However, now that I am a high school ASL teacher and had my students read it. The majority of them enjoyed the book! I am no longer using it in my classes because of not really caring for forcing my students to read yet another novel in school that I have trouble doing anything with during class because we are voice off and focus on learning ASL in order to communicate.

Well-written and very eye-opening. You could really feel for the family learning to deal with having a deaf child.
