Honey bees are remarkable fliers! Although they cannot hover, they can fly up and down over a relatively short distance., land on flowers blowing in the wind, or land precisely at the hive entrance. They do this all with a load weighing half of their own weight! Bees fly about 12 miles per hour. However, they may be able to fly nearly twice that speed if they are required to do so.
The average honey bee lives for about six weeks. During their short lives, they produce about 1/12th teaspoon of honey. So that means it took all the hard work of 6 bees to create 1 single honey stick!
Did you know that on really hot days a colony of bees will gather up to a gallon of water and deposit it in droplets outside the hive? The entrance bees gather and fan these droplets with their wings to cool the hive.
