Ever buy an inexpensive raincoat at a hardware store, truck stop, bait shop, or discount store? This is the same material. Completely waterproof. Water will not saturate and soak through.Since it is just as thick and heavy as an old school raincoat, you will want something lighter in weight if you plan on backpacking. You can keep this in the trunk of your car, or behind the seat of your pickup truck, for emergencies.Made in the same style and pattern as a military G.I. poncho, so it will work if you want to fabricate shelter. And this will cover your backpack and keep your gear dry. Snaps on the side will allow for airflow and venting so that you do not build condensation on the inside.Assuming that you're in winter conditions, and dressed appropriately with insulating, windproof, and waterproof layers, this poncho will work just fine On rainy days, I'm already wearing:Terramar Thermasilk Sock Liner, Black, LargeTerramar Men's Thermasilk Filament Pant (Black, Large)Terramar Men's Thermasilk Filament Crew (Black, X-Large)US Military PolarTec Mens Calf-Length Fleece Bib Overalls, Large, Short/RegularPendleton Men's Wool Hoody, Brown/Tan Ombre, LargeEddie Bauer Men's 1936 Skyliner Model Down Jacket, Black XLUS Wings Brown Horsehide Leather A-2 Bomber Jacket (50)Carhartt Men's Quilt Lined Zip To Waist Biberalls,Black,38 x 28Chippewa Men's 17" 27950 Polishable Boot,Black,10 D USI'm layered in silk, wool, goose down, and leather. My goal is to be warm. Trap as much body heat as possible. Nothing wrong with modern synthetics like Gore-Tex, Thinsulate, PolarTec, Hippora, HyVent.........for me, it's just what I already own. You should use the combination which works best for you. You could try:Carhartt Men's Quilt Lined Duck Coveralls,Brown,50 ShortRefrigiWear Men's -50 Hooded Coveralls Navy XLDanner Men's Super Rain Forest 200 Gram Work Boot,Black,10 D USThis pocho, andFrogg Toggs Men's Pro Action Pant, Black, Mediumon top of what i'm already wearing, will keep me completely dry and warm.
