I suspect computer-aided manufacture. Practically assembled itself - and rock solid after! You may be tempted to tighten the screws during assembly...they're so agreeable, but fight the feeling! By tightening screws here or there (before complete assembly) you run the risk of locking in some misalignment - thus making the process difficult (at best) - impossible at the worst. The finished piece was varnished nicely...and it's a dark wood, too. Looks great with my receiver and cd player on it. Will easily accomodate a smaller (even 32) flat-screen TV on top. This is my second Winsome piece - and I couldn't be happier! Yay!!

I ad bought a taller version of this awhile back and was pleased so I ordered this one. It is a little darker wood than the first, but just as beautiful. I am very pleased.

We just remodeled a small bathroom and I needed a dark shelf to match the vanity, mirror and over-the-john cabinet. I was a little worried after reading some of the reviews but ordered the shelf anyway. The price was right and I'd been looking for quite some time. I put the shelf together by myself. Absolutely no problems. It's very sturdy. I have no issues with the finish at all. It *is* wood, not particle board. I couldn't be happier and for the price this can't be beat.

It is a great deep mahogany color with a bit of brown-reddish tones, it is very shiny, seems solid, was a bit heavy so I don't know if it's solid parts but doesn't feel like particle board, color was fairly consistent throughout and went together with a few screws! I bought this to match my Graco Stanford Crib and Delta Espresso Cherry Dresser for/as a nursery nightstand/bookshelf, matches very nicely! For $47 it was a good deal delivered for free. Box came in good shape. Very happy. I think this will be a good end table or night stand for years to come. Reminds me of something you'd buy at World Market for over $100.

This shelf took about 5 minutes to assemble - super easy with clear instructions. It is exactly what I wanted, matches the other items in the room and fits perfectly in the spot I had in mind. I don't have a real entry area in my home and backpacks and bags used to end up just in a pile near the door. Now they get stashed on this shelf, which is behind a chair. So now, instead of seeing clutter when you walk in the door, you just see a chair. But the backpacks and bags are still easily accessible. A fantastic solution! I'm delighted!

I am using this shelf as a end table for my front room. It has the storage I need and is compact enough not to be an eyesore in the room.

These shelves are made from real wood so they look good and are sturdy. The assembly was quick and easy. 15 minutes tops.

I wanted a small book shelf as I don't have a lot of books. This one was perfect for the small space I have available. It arrived in good condition, was packaged nicely, and was very easy to assemble. All of the holes matched up, etc. It seems to be very sturdy and it sits level on the floor. The on-line photos make this item look almost brownish but I know that Espresso is almost black which is why I bought it. It matches very nicely with the other items I've purchased from Winsome in both color and quality. It was well worth the low price.

I have two products from this company (have owned them 3-4 months) and they both deserve high marks. At this price point, most furniture you find is cheap particle board and cardboard. This is real wood, cut well, designed nicely. The hardware works well and looks sturdy. The shelves feel strong and it does not wobble. There were a couple small flaws in the wood (not really noticeable with the dark finish) but that's to be expected with any real wood piece that isn't custom/handmade. We just used the other side of the shelf. The finish looks rich and beautiful... blends in well with mahoganies and cherries and looks good even next to much more expensive pieces. The size was perfect for tucking into a small corner and I was surprised how much it holds.

I use this in my apartment bedroom to hold snacks and water and it works wonderfully. It was very easy to set up, I believe about 5-10 minutes for me. Everything came well packed and nothing was broken upon arrival. It seems like a pretty well built product and has had no issues for me since I bought it. I've had it around 6 months now.

I bought this shelf to use as a nightstand. Our bedroom is very small and our bed is low, so I needed something to fit in a small corner that wouldn't be too high to reach while lying in bed. This shelf was perfect. It seems sturdy enough (it's a nightstand, so it's not like it sees a lot of action) and it's holding up well. It looks good, too. I don't have any issues with the quality or appearance of mine. It is a VERY dark brown.

I was looking for something that would hold my printer and paper as well as a makeshift storage area on the first floor for baby items for my granddaughter. I also ordered the 3 baskets to go with it. Directions say you need 2 people to put together, but I had no problems at all doing by myself. Sturdy, nice looking piece - exactly the size and quality I wanted.

I have now owned this piece for just over two years, and I can say that this little bookshelf has truly stood the test of time. The instructions for assembly were straight-forward and easy to understand. I liked the fact that I only needed an Allen wrench to put this shelf together; this made assembly quick and easy. The entire shelf was put together in less than 45 minutes. The wooden caps to hide the screws were a very nice touch.I use this shelf in my master bedroom as half bookshelf/half nightstand. The top shelf is spacious enough to hold my lamp, alarm clock, Kindle, and a few decorative items with plenty of room to spare. The two lower shelves are deep and well-made. There are no signs of bowing with the middle shelf (a problem I've experienced with other brands of bookcases) despite the fact that it is housing over 20 hardcover books and roughly a dozen paperback books. The bottom shelf is tall enough that I can fit several large format hardcovers without needing to turn the books on their sides. This shelf offers many storage possibilities and would look great with some wicker or wood baskets.I absolutely love the Espresso color. I was concerned that the bookcase might be too dark (I didn't want something that looked black) but the color is accurate to the manufacturer's photographs -- a perfect, rich dark brown. This has been a great addition to my home and I wouldn't hesitate to purchase more of these shelves.

The unit arrived on time, in great shape. When I opened the box I found all the parts wrapped in heavy weight paper protective covering and bound together with a strap to prevent individual parts from moving around and chaffing or otherwise marring the finish.Assemble instructions say two people needed...maybe for a much larger shelf unit, but I doubt it. This unit on assemble scale of 1 - 5 is a 1-1.5 MAX!...as for being solid when assembled...that's a 5+...This baby isn't going anywhere...

This was my second winsome wood purchase... and again I am very pleased.I previously bought the shelf that was one tier taller...along with all the baskets. I used the bigger shelf unit for some books so I put the rest of the baskets on this unit. The shelf unit was VERY easy to assemble...took about 20min and is sturdy. The color of the expresso is very dark brown, but looks elegant with the rattan baskets which have a cedar/cherry type weave to them. I have cherry wood in my bedroom and this was a great way to bring in the dark brown expresso wood without clashing since the baskets had a cherry weave in them. The baskets are sturdy and seem to be strong enough to hold everything from jeans to random lighter items. The wood itself was not as smooth/sanded as I personally would have liked... so after the expresso staining by the manufacturer it had the duller appearance in the places that the wood was rough. This was easy to adapt to by turning the wood piece over to hide it. For the price it was worth every penny... I prefer solid wood over particle board any day of the week!

I didn't have any of the problems that others have reported. The finish on all the wood was even and without blemish. It was very easy to put them together. I'm actually using them as end tables on either side of my couch. They are a bit taller than my couch, but that actually works out perfectly for reading lamps. They are very sturdy and stable. I also ordered a matching bookcase and couldn't be happier with all three pieces. I would definitely purchase this product again.

I needed an additional bookcase in my bedroom and didn't want anything too big...or too expensive. I was a little worried ordering this as some of this manufacturer's pieces weren't reviewed too well (pieces scratched, didn't fit, etc.)It arrived and I immediately opened it to make sure it was okay. No problems. Well, a tiny scratch on the back side of the top shelf...not a big deal since this will sit against the wall. I put it together by myself in about 25 minutes. I did go the extra step of putting some wood glue (not included, but even white glue will work) on the dowel pieces and on the little caps that cover the screws (it comes with 12 screws, and Allen wrench, and the little wooden caps that cover the holes.)It looks very nice. The top doesn't sit perfectly on the sides, the middle of the side pieces are just slightly larger than the ends so the top has tiny gaps under it in the front and back. It could have been more flush, but it isn't fine furniture...and the gaps are really only noticeable when you look at it straight on from low in the front...and they are small...less than 16th of an inch. I wasn't sanding or planing for that small of an amount. It feels very study and is already full with books. I sort of wish I picked one with adjustable shelves, but choose this because it was made of wood, not particleboard and plastic laminate. I really like it.
