The description for this posthole digger is incorrect and does not measure 68 inches long. This is a 58 inch long posthole digger.Other than missing almost a foot in length, the tool is well made. I own other Ames garden tools, and they last for years when taken care of.

Having had a post hole digger with metal handles, this wood handle model has a much better usable function. The hardwood handles are easier to use and are much more comfortable if you have more than 3 or 4 holes to dig. These wood handles absorbed the shock of digging in hard clay or rocky soil. Metal handles do not absorb this shock and makes it harder to do more than one hole at a time. This hardwood, most likely, straight grain ash wood (the same as professional baseball bats are made from) is sturdy and easier to grip. Only sweaty hands will slip. Ill take wood over metal every time. All connecting rivets and/ or screws are secure and need no further work to keep them performing well for years to come. Only abuse will ruin this tool.

You know the depth of the hole while digging

Seemed pretty solid, unfortunately it broke while digging my first hole. I was able to repair it by drilling out the old connectors and replacing with bolts, but would probably have returned if it wasn't so big.

Living in the country there's always a need for these around my place. I've used these here and there several times over the past few months and they work as expected. However, to further put them to the test, I recently used them to put down 16 6x6 deck posts. Didn't fail one time. On a farm one can never know what's under the ground's surfacefrom cast iron pieces, concrete debris, old wood, tin, pieces of chain, etc. This was a solid break in, they performed well.
