(My husband is writing this review.) This hoe head is the BOSS. We have a no-till garden and this is just what I needed to remove the sod without digging too deep. We are planting two 20x20 plots and I used a standard garden hoe to remove the sod on the first plot. I had lots of blisters, not to mention a sore back. I didn't want to repeat that effort on the next plot, so I bought this grape hoe. What a difference! The second plot required less than half the time to clear the sod.Several people have lamented that finding a handle is very difficult. I went to Menards and purchased a 36 railroad pick handle for $12 (on clearance). I wanted a shorter handle than normal, so this was perfect. I cut about 3 off the fat end (which is actually the handle end) and then slid the hoe head on and used a mini sledge to tap the hoe head firmly onto the handle.I didn't need to screw the hoe head in place because as I swing the hoe, the head is naturally driven onto the fat end of the handle.I use this hoe by straddling it and swinging so that the hoe goes between my legs. This is not perhaps the way most people want to use this hoe, but it's perfect for me to remove sod. A longer handle would not have worked as well.

There was nothing whatsoever good about this product. The so-called matching grape hoe handle did not match the tolerances. I ordered two sets of these hoes and handles, and it was an absolute joke. If you enjoy shaping or whittling wood, this set is for you.

For years, I've hated and utterly failed at digging with a common garden hoe (you know the ones I'm talking about). But that's because those types of hoes are not meant for digging.I marveled when a landscaping crew dug out my heavy clay when installing a new 22x14 patio. They dug down 4 inches without any heavy machinery using only hand tools and it dawned on me that the normal garden hoe that you would buy at a box store simply isn't meant for excavation. This hoe makes manual excavation a pleasure; it's so satisfying to use that you'll find yourself oddly yearning to dig out patches of dirt (yeah, I'll figure out what to do with that later I guess). Neighbors will marvel at your dirt excavation prowess. The metal is nice and thick so it can be resharpened as necessary with a grinder. The one issue I have is that I ordered the handle to go with this and it is quite difficult to get a very solid connection between the head and the handled. The included screw was flimsy and I replaced with a stainless steel screw. Still, even with the screw, I feel that the head is not attached securely. I tried various methods including using a rubber mallet, standing on the head and pulling up on the handle, and so on. Nothing got it quite as tight as I would like it.Don't let that stop you, though; if you hate excavating dirt, it's because you're using the wrong tool. You NEED this tool.
