Mission: Empowerment begins with education!Our goal is to provide access for quality education to those living in the rural villages of Central America. Together with local governments, our partners and deeply engaged parents, we provide young children living in the poorest communities the opportunity to learn so that they can work towards a brighter future. Founded in 2009, School the World broke ground at its first school in Guatemala. Since then, we have built 107 primary schools, trained 3,908 teachers and enrolled more than 12,000 students in Honduras, Guatemala and Panama! We are one of the first NGOs to mandate community partnership. We require municipality to contribute 50% of the costs and the community must contribute land and unskilled labor. We also require the parents to participate in parent education programs; even our supply chain of books and supplies depend on partial parental contribution. It is through these efforts that we have been creating lasting change. Our goals is to expand to other developing countries and replicate the model of success we have witnessed in the last 11 years to bring about change through education.

Programs: Infrastructure Accomplishments: School the World builds inviting educational infrastructure in partnership with rural municipalities and communities. The schools are typically 3-classroom concrete buildings, with electricity and windows for ventilation, and this is always the most impressive building in the community. To build these schools, School the World forms written partnerships with the municipalities and the communities. The municipality must provide 50% of the construction costs or the materials themselves and support supervision of the construction. The communities must provide the land and all of the unskilled labor. Student Service Learning Accomplishments:The student service program is a fundraising/travel program for high school students. A group of 10-15 high schoolers raise $3,500 each to build a three-classroom primary school or play facility in Guatemala. They travel to that village over their February, March, April or summer school break and help complete the build (painting, concrete work, etc. ) and participate in a dedication ceremony to open the school on their last day in the village. The trip fee covers both school construction materials and all trip expenses. School the World staff conducts four mandatory pre-trip seminars with the students to learn about the history, culture, economy, and geography of Guatemala. The program also includes daily afternoon trips for the students to experience Guatemalan culture and historic sites. From 2013-2016,300 high school students from the U. S. have completed this program. Teacher Training Accomplishments: We trained ~200 teachers to date in literacy teaching techniques. We also provided detailed written supporting materials to each teacher. To deepen motivation, we recognize excellence in teaching specific behaviors we intend to incent with monetary awards and public recognition. Through this program, School the World has: succeeded in creating awareness of new teaching strategies among teachers; stimulated interest in the improvement of teaching and teaching plans;developed a sense of pride and motivation among teachers in STW schools; enhanced learning and student interest in reading. Parent Engagement: Empowered 2,125 parents as first educators. We all know education begins in the home. And the more involved parents are, both in and out of school, the more likely a child is to learn. The majority of our parents cannot read or write, but they desperately want an education for their children. These parents have tremendous influence over what happens in their local school and we help them understand how best to use that influence. With our parental engagement program, we organize parent meeting every two weeks. We engage them in discussion and strive for outcomes like “code if care” for school property and peer-to-peer outreach to the parents of children who are not in school. We also educate them about some of the most important indicators of learning, such as instructional time.
