I read the reviews and some said it ran true to size and others said it ran small. Erroring on the side of caution, I ordered a size medium for my son (who wears size 5t). It is big on him, so a size small would have been the better choice. But we will keep the larger size as there will be plenty of room for a coat underneath instead of needing to wear one over the costume. With a few minor modifications, this will fit perfectly.

I recommend that you buy a size bigger than the one your child uses, so that it is more comfortable and can use it in another occasion that you like.
