I am not sure how GM came up with this design... In any case, this tool make it possible to disconnect the fuel filter. Even with the tool it is a MAJOR pain . At least it was for me. The tool helps to open the pins that hold the filter in place on one end (pls see pic). On my first try I disconnected the bracket that holds filter in place and unscrewed the other end of the fuel line. This made filter hang free, and then I tried using this tool to disconnect the other end of fuel line. After struggling for 40mins I gave up. (I consider myself pretty handy and do all my car maintenance . After giving up on this thing I have changed rear shocks , springs in the next 45mins, just to give you an idea of what a pain this fuel filter is). Attempt number 2. I have unscrewed the other end of fuel line, but did not completely unscrew the bracket. This way the filter was snugly in place but could move sideways. I have then inserted the tool and used a large screwdriver between the tool and the filter to pry it. This has finally gotten it off. Hope this helps someone..
