Picked up this bell to be the final touch for my Navy themed wall in my den. It does serve that purpose quite well, so if you're an old salt or just looking at adding to a nautical theme, this might be a good accent to add. From a Navy perspective, this bell design is similar to QDeck/Bridge bell but maybe a little bigger than 1/2 the size.It is an unlacquered brass, so expect some tarnish upon arrival (time to break out the Brasso or Never Dull!) Although this may seem to be a detractor, this may actually enhance the bell, if you're looking for a weathered brass, a little DIY solution can add a good patina to it. Or on the other hand, you can get a really good high polish on it.Detractors: It is cheap and very light. This lends to a very tinny sound and not the full sound of heavier brass bells. The mounting bracket was very loose at the bell attachment. It took some work with a pair of padded vice grips to close the gap in the mount enough to make it work properly. I could have used as is, but it left a lot of play and prevented the bell from sitting level; also making it hard to actually ring the bell since it swung freely in every direction. Also had to use a crescent wrench after mounting since the bracket was about 2-3 degrees twisted. Again, not a large effort but it just indicates how cheaply it is made. There is also an area on the bell flair that is flattened, not enough to notice looking at the bell (unless you are really inspecting it).Now the clacker seems to be painted cast iron (which adds to the tinny sound) and the internal eye hook was significantly bent to one side making it very hard to actually ring the bell (even after fixing the mount). This too was fixable.I saw in some comments that the fancy work on the clacker looked worn and dirty. It may be that I got lucky and the fancy work looks clean. The line that was used looks like a cotton/synthetic mix and actually looks very nice.In short, it does have a good aesthetic look, and does accent a my room well. If you are looking for a functioning bell, something to be used on a boat or in a ceremony, I'd suggest looking at some of the more expensive options.
