Mission: For more than 20 years, Family Lives On has been increasing the awareness of the impact of grief and trauma on a young person. The nonprofit’s mission is to provide lifelong emotional support for children and teens whose mother or father has died. The Tradition Program provides opportunities for intentional remembering, creating a safe haven for grief, communication, and celebration. We serve all children ages 3-18 regardless of race, gender, religion, socioeconomic status, or the cause of the parent's death. Our program is one-of-a-kind as we help the child carry on a tradition that they once celebrated with the parent who died. Although there are other forms of grief support available, our Tradition Program is ongoing and has 5-7 touch points throughout the year in addition to the annual tradition celebration. Not only are we facilitating their traditions, but we are also often a conduit to other grief support services. We help to heal not just the child but the family unit. As part of our mission, Family Lives On continues to work to adopt new practices in the field of child bereavement and to change the social conversation about death and childhood grief. #GiveGriefWords
Results: To-date Family Lives On has served thousands of traditions to grieving children, teens and their families. Data shows that when a child maintains a strong connection to the parent who died they can experience grief in a more healthy way. Experts say: “This Tradition Program provides an opportunity to activate the memories, not just speak of them. The experiential engagement of the activity utilizes all five senses and can be a more powerful healing tool to help move a child through grief to healing. The program is also family based rather than support group oriented. It is child directed, not other focused. It is designed and fulfilled as the grieving child directs, not as someone else determines. It is truly a life-focusing and child-centered intervention. It represents the very best of child-focused bereavement support services. ”Bereavement Expert Alicia S. Franklin, LICSW, GMS
