Great boots. I have been buying 5:11 for years. They would last about a year and then I’d need a new pair. I purchase these for much less and they are just as good if not nicer than my 5:11s

My son wore these for a Fire Fighter Physical testing exam. He said they were awesome. Way better than he expected. Did not have to even break them in. Will definitely recommend Bates Boots to other firefighters for sure !!!!

These are the boots for you if you like cold wet feet. These are the opposite of water resistant. They absorb the water and keep your feet wet all day. You don't even need to step into a lot of water to notice it. A few drops and your foot is wet. Don't even dare to use them if it snows bc they aren't insulated either. So your toes will be wet and cold even with 2 pairs of socks.

You can also feel where the reinforced toe begins. Your big toe and pinky toe will rub against it.

On the bright side they are easy to slip on and off and the zipper seems durable.

I've been an EMT for 10 years, gone through a lot of boots. There are much better options out there. Especially if you work in an outdoor environment.

My 3rd pair over the years, and these boots never fail. Durable, comfortable, and they do not wear out quickly. Always happy with these boots.

Boots fell apart at the seams after 6 months. Other brands last me a year. Zipper broke after 5 months. I will never buy Bates again.

I've worn these boots for 8 months as of this review in a CNC shop that works with Steel, Cast Iron, and Aluminum. Wore these boots right out of the box, so break-in is pretty easy. These boots are extremely light. I let a co-worker heft them and he raised his eyebrows in surprise. That weight is probably a good reason they're pretty comfortable for walking around a shop with concrete floors all day. I work in a CNC shop, so my boots are constantly exposed to oils, coolants, and floors with steel, iron, and aluminum chips. The soles are the only reason I'm going 4 stars. It's been about 8-9 months now and the bottoms are toast. Worn completely through the bottom layer of tread rubber on the balls of the feet (there's a sub layer of rubber, so there are no actual holes yet). Also, the edges of the soles have been peeling off in small layers for months now for some reason. All in all, it's been a pretty good boot. I just expected a $120 boot to last longer than a $60 dollar boot. If you get it on sale (it's discounted to 70 as of this review), then it's a pretty good deal.

These boots are the best. I have been wearing them for years and have tried others but I always come back to the Bates composite toe side zip 5 inch boots. I walk a lot and go through a lot of metal detectors and these boots are fantastic.

I've been buying Bates boots for over 30 yrs. I can count on the fit and they never bother my feet. This pair is no exception. But, this is the first pair that aren't made in the USA, disappointing. That is why I'm only giving them 4 stars.

    Product FAQ

    How do I clean my footwear?
    In general we recommend the following guidelines for cleaning the footwear:
    Cleaning: on a regular basis, brush away any surface dirt with a soft brush. After extended, rugged use, wash with mild soap and warm water. Be sure to rinse all soap off.
    Drying: open footwear fully, remove the insole and laces and dry at room temperature. Never expose to heat!
    Conditioning: recommended treatment depends on construction and materials of the footwear (most treatments do alter color and appearance).

    What do your different widths mean?
    Our footwear is made in an array of widths in order to provide our customers with the best fit possible. See chart below for width descriptions:
    N= Narrowest width
    B= Narrow width
    C = One width wider than B
    D= Average or medium width
    M= Equal to a "D" or medium width
    E= the narrower of the "wide" widths
    W= Equal to an "E" or wide width
    2E or EW= Extra wide width
    3E= A little more wide than a 2E
    4E= Our widest width offering
    Whenever possible have your foot measured with a Brannock device by a shoe care professional. Using a Brannock device is the most accurate method to determine your shoe size and width.

    Shoe Care

    Here is everything you need to know to ensure your boots or shoes are in great shape now and in the future

    • Store shoes and boots with a shoetree. This will help the shoe retain its shape while drying it properly. Never store or dry shoes near direct heat.
    • To extend the life of your Bates product it is recommended to alternate your shoes daily. Pairs alternated everyday and stored overnight with shoetrees will typically last more than twice as long as a single pair of shoes worn everyday.

    For cleaning Hi-Gloss shoes

    • Use Bates Poromeric Cleaner. Just follow directions on bottle.

    For cleaning Leather

    • Remove excess dirt with a soft brush.
    • For the most effective shine remove the laces before you start polishing.
    • If using a polish or cream be sure to apply evenly with a brush or soft cloth. Once polish has dried buff to a shine using a natural bristle brush.
    • Instant shine liquids are also available. Remove excess dirt then evenly apply liquid to leather portion of your shoe or boot. These formulations dry to a shine without buffing.

    For cleaning Wolverine Warrior Leather or rough side out leather

    • Wolverine Warrior Leathers unique properties allow for more liberal cleaning techniques than other rough out boots.
    • Allow dirt to dry before cleaning. Brush dried dirt from boot with a medium bristled brush.
    • After removing loose dry dirt, a mixture of warm water and mild dish soap can be applied with a medium bristle brush. Rinse with clear water and repeat if necessary.
    • Allow to dry naturally.
    • Rebrush the entire boot with a clean medium bristle brush. This process will help to reactivate the 3M Scotchgard that was applied during the tanning process.

    I'm a big fan of Bates boots. I've worn them for 10 years in various work environments, and they've always been comfortable and long-lasting. I still have the first pair I bought, which get used for Paintball and fishing. The second pair I bought is my "around the house" work boots for yard work and such, and the newest pair was my work boots until I started working at my current job a year ago. This shop requires safety toes, and none of my previous Bates boots were.

I tried a cheaper pair of well-recommended steel-toe work boots from another company, and frankly, they were torture. I tried every insert, every orthotic, nothing made them even bearable.

Well, my first year was up, and we get an annual stipend towards new boots, so I ordered these.

What a massive improvement! They are so much lighter, and much more comfortable, than my previous safety-toe boots. They're not near as comfortable as my previous, non-safety-toe Bates boots, but they are so much better that I'm not limping out to my truck at the end of my shift anymore! I can walk again!

    Been wearing these for a week now. They fit good. They are a little stiff during the break in period but all boots are. The top of the boot where the zipper is rubs my leg through the sock. That I don't like. They need more material or padding around the top to stop the rubbing. Never had this problem on the 8" boots. Have to fold the top of my sock down to stuff around the edge to make padding and stop the rubbing. Composite toe boots are always roomier in the toe so that might take some getting used to for some. I wear 10 1/2D and the width and length seems right on. Soles seem thick and strong but not so stiff that walking is uncomfortable. If you're wearing a work boot you want something strong to protect the feet and have good cushion. These seem good in that regard. The side zipper makes on and off easier. Not sure how long the thin laces will last. I like thicker laces on boots. You can walk through metal detectors with no problem. There is no metal in these boots. That is a big plus and time saver for those going through security checkpoints. Overall good boot. Will see how they hold up over time. If they didn't rub my leg at the top by the zipper I would have given 5 stars.

    As of this review, I have only worn these boots one day. My first impression was positive. They look nice. Not too high. Not too low. After wearing them for a few minutes, I noticed some chafing on my ankle bone. The ankle support is very stiff. After walking on concrete all day and climbing ladders, I noticed my feet were not aching or tired. I was impressed with the comfort of the insoles. My experience with Bates has always been somewhat positive, with a couple of negative experiences. I've worn Bates and Magnums for 22 years in the military, one year in the police academy, and for 2 years at my current job. For the money, Bates doesn't disappoint. But as with all work shoe reviews, I will give a follow up review later.
