The picture of this thing is deceiving as my pestle was MUCH shorter - as in, if you lay the pestle in the mortar, the very top of it is barely above the rim. As such, it can be pretty annoying on your hand to use it because you have to do it in a pretty awkward fashion to not crunch your fingers on the mortar. If the pestle were longer, like the picture shows, I would really love it.I only use it to crunch up spices - like anise seed. It works OK, but I definitely don't go as long as I should because of the pestle issue.It IS quite pretty and I love the small size as I don't need a huge one. Mine was much lighter in color than the picture - tan & ivory speckled mostly (I added a picture to this listing), but it does say that style and color will vary in the description.

The one I bought was a real light color and don't have the lip around the top. It has several long deep cracks running down the pestle. I like the weight and is easy to hold in one hand. doesn't do the best job but was worth the price I paid.

I am using this for grinding my mothers vitamins to go into her daily energy shakes. She has beginning Alzheimer's and the doctors told me to give her Boost and some protein powder to bolster her physical strength. This helps me get them powdered really fine and mixed into the shake. Great tool and much better than trying to grind them in my Cuisinart Coffee Grinder!

I love mortar & pestles because they look like an iconic pharmacy tool and evoke some medicinal/ herbal nostalgia. I think this mortar has a great shape, I love that that it's long, so when I grind, stuff doesn't fly out. The pestle is heavy and smooth. Because both pieces are smooth, I get all of the powders out without their being stuck in any crevice. Currently, I leave it out on my kitchen windowsill. :)

First off, this item is beautiful. It is one of those kitchen tools that you just leave out on the counter instead of putting it away. My 4 stars only rating is because of the interior of the mortar, where there is a sharpish corner at the bottom perimeter instead of a rounded one that would mate better with the pestle. The space is small enough that you can still crush a peppercorn, but large enough that you cannot grind it to a powder by just working the perimeter. You can work around this by moving material back to center, however.I bought this item to rough grind coffee for my french press. For that it works well, and provides an enjoyable rustic (and quieter) way to prepare my morning brew. I am sure that I will find many more uses for it in the future.Bottom line:You want a M&P that works well - Don't buyYou are okay with a M&P that will leave some rough grinds - buy, but only because it's beautiful
