Causes: Food, Food Banks & Pantries

Mission: Ending hunger in new mexico. Vision is to permanently end hunger in new mexico. Mission: feed every hungry person today; seed partnerships that build self-sufficiency for tomorrow; lead to achieve our vision of permanently ending hunger in new mexico.

Programs: Rrfb distributes food to over 70,000 people every week through a network of approximately 400 emergency food pantries, shelters, soup kitchens and four regional food banks. For every $1 donation, rrfb is able to distribute five meals. Rrfb provided over 26.8 million meals during the year ended june 30,2017, including more than 5.3 million meals through its mobile food pantry. The mobile food pantry is a travelling food pantry that delivers nutritious and much needed food directly to hungry people in need. The mobile food pantry delivers to areas where individuals may not have access to food support programs or where food pantries or feeding programs do not exist. In addition, rrfb sponsors other direct-service programs including disaster relief, the healthy foods center, and referrals for food. For the year ended june 30,2017 rrfb received 25 million pounds of food through donations and rescued food, 8 million pounds from the u. S. Department of agriculture, and 730,000 pounds of purchased food, to help feed the hungry in new mexico.

the healthy foods center (hfc) at roadrunner food bank began operations in the summer of 2015.The hfc is an on-site medical referral food pantry. Healthcare partners in the albuquerque metro area refer their patients to the hfc if they are found to be food insecure and suffer from a food-related chronic condition such as diabetes. In fiscal year 2017,7,485 healthy food referrals were filled, totaling 317,000 pounds of food. 70% of food distributed in the hfc consisted of fresh fruits and vegetables, and rrfb has measured improvements in individual health as a result of the program.

rrfb's childhood hunger initiative (chi) was launched in fiscal year 2015.Chi is a food distribution strategy tailored specifically to the needs of participating school sites across new mexico. The selected participating schools are now serving children and their families through more comprehensive services that may include mobile food pantries, school-site food pantries, and backpack programs (which provide supplemental food provisions to food-insecure children on weekends) in combined and/or complementary ways. Chi took place in 88 schools during fiscal year 2017, and rrfb continually seeks to expand the program as new funding becomes available.
