Spent an entire day with an impact wrench and liquid wrench trying to get a lug nut off that was way over-tightened and had fused to the recessed aluminum wheel. The standard impact socket finally destroyed the acorn cap and without that extra layer the socket wouldn't fit anymore and lug nut rounded off completely smooth. I finally gave up and bought this Irwin kit. It took the lug nut off before the delivery guy could even reach the end of the street. It came off so quick and easy (less than 2 seconds) that I thought it had lost it's bite and was just spinning but when I pulled the tool back the lug was off and in the socket. It had such a good bite on the lug nut that it took me about 20 minutes to get the lug nut out of the tool. I feel kinda stupid for having worked so long and so hard on something that just needed me to buy the right tool for the job.

This did exactly what I needed it to do. I had a locking lug nut that was damaged and I was unable to use the key to get it unlocked. I tried everything that I could think of. I used tools, heat and even a chisel and was not able to remove the stuck lug nut. I ordered the lug nut extractor set and wasn't sure that it would even work. I hammered the extractor onto the damaged lug. Even though the extractor was only able to be hammered about 1/2 inch onto the lug, I was able to easily remove the damaged lug using a breaker bar. This was the only instance that I have had to use the lug nut extractor but it worked perfectly. Highly recommend if you have a damaged lug nut or locking lug nut that you cannot remove.

My son has a 2007 Honda Accord. The Mr Gard security lugs are stripped out. They strip our very easily but that is for another review. Anyway, I used one of the sockets to removed the stripped lug. I had to hammer the socket of the lug and carefully remove it. It worked. You MUST hammer the socket on and you MUST get it straight over the lug nut. I needed a bench vice to remove the lug from the socket. I have attached a picture of the stripped lug. Some of you may find the socket is too large for the socket hole. In my case, that was not a problem. This socket is about the same size as a good lug wrench but larger (thicker wall) than a standard socket. I am very happy with the quality and results. I have had great luck with other Irwin Hanson tools.I believe this tool would work well for a variety of stripped or damaged bolt heads.

When I was looking for a easy way to take out my striped lug nut I find this set. I purchase the set because I have a lot of tools and the more tools the better - and because the size that I was looking came in the set 7/8 -

Using a brass hammer I tapped the bolt extractor inside the striped nut ,once inside using a manual wrench just turn to loose and voila .....

Awesome , awesome tool; you don't have any regrets

Broke the spiral teeth when used per instructions. Would not grip locking lug nut. Tied both air impact and breaker bar. Just damaged the tool. Ended up taking car to a garage and paid to have them removed.

By double thick

While the quality of this product seems to be well above its competition, its design does have a severe issue.

Keep in mind that I tried this tool on both of my vehicles - and both are running stock wheels. Irwin markets this tool set as a "Lugnut" Specialty "Extractor" set. Therefore, one should think that it excels at one task . . . removing lugnuts! BUT, for the tool to do its job it must first make contact with the lugnut. Before buying my concern was if the tool's thickness would allow it to fit over the lugnut while still fitting in the hole. Usually air impact tools have a thicker, or beefier, sidewall construction which makes it difficult to fit into spots, these fit - that way.

The issue with the design problem comes in with the length, way too short. The socket is barely larger than the lugnut itself, if at all. The only way I see these working is if the lugnut is on a smoothie style wheel or something similar to the spare tire wheel. Think about if your wheels have a hole/cavity/opening in which the lugnut fits DOWN into the wheel. If so, these will not fit on deep enough. To hopefully give a better description of the issue imagine a wheel you would see on the typical landscape trailer. These sockets would work great on that type of wheel. But on most OEM wheels today the lugnuts do NOT sit ON the wheel, more than they sit IN the wheel.
