Mission: The Columbia Heights Community Marketplace (The Marketplace) is a community based, 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that promotes the health and well being of our community. We operate a vibrant farmers market and host innovative programs that help build and strengthen the health of our neighborhood.
Results: Improve the health of our community● access to fresh, nutritious locally grown food through our farmers market ● administered $20,000 matching funds to support the purchase of fruit and vegetables by individuals who receive federal nutrition assistance benefits● 53% reduction in childhood obesity in the FVRx programSupport neighborhood businesses● farmers market customers report they plan to spend an average of $27 that day at surrounding businesses● 25% of farmers market vendors are neighborhood businessesEncourage sustainable living● partner with youth organizations and local schools to teach young people and their families how to grow their own food● prevent almost 3 tons of food from going to waste by channeling excess food to local homeless shelters and programsBring diverse neighbors together● an average of 2,000 diverse people (age, race, ethnicity and income level) attend our weekly farmers market to mingle and interact on our civic plaza
