After trying many varieties of carrots over the years, St. Valery carrots have become our tried and true, family favorite! They have a bright red-orange color, wonderfully sweet flavor, just the right crispness, and are an excellent keeper! Truly an exceptional heirloom, it dates back to the mid 1800's and has been considered "the best and most handsome main crop carrot and is enormously productive". Great for fresh eating, cooking, and juicing! Open pollinated.
WHERE & WHEN TO PLANT: Plant St. Valery carrot seeds outdoors 1/4" deep in early spring, about 2-3 weeks before the last expected frost. Carrots are slow to germinate and need steady moisture for successful germination. These carrots are hardy and can tolerate light frosts, making them suitable for spring and fall planting. In warmer climates, they can even be grown throughout the winter?.
REMARKS: Carrots prefer a sunny, well-drained location with loose soil. Well-rotted manure/compost and calcium sulfate mixed into each row prior to planting will stimulate growth and increase yield and size considerably. Evenly water throughout the summer. Thin the plants, if needed.
