I have this valve mounted in the bottom of my drinking trough. This along with a 1500 watt sinking heater. Keeps fresh water for my cattle in freezing weather. In my area. We some times get to 0 Fahrenheit in the extreme. The trough doesn't freeze. The water supply line and cut off. Are in a 2'x2' box that goes about 2' deep in the ground under the trough. A stainless steel braided washing machine hose connects it to the float valve. The trough sits on a concrete pad. Just had to do that because of the mud in wet weather. Trough is next to a barn. That has electric service that works the heater. My only fear is in the event of a power outage. Then it's back to breaking ice. :(

In north texas we have usually several days of temperatures in the 20's or colder. At those temperatures the above water float valve freezes, even though I use a heating tape and pipe insulation. The above water valve also seems to develop leaks due to the variable or high-water pressure. The underwater valve allows most of the water line to lay on the ground, which never freezes. So far so good with the underwater valve.

We use it on a 85 gallon water tank. Best thing is it fills quietly. We have wild burros that drink. They are very skittish. No leaks. All is good!!

These are just plain bullet-proof. Float issues disappeared since installing 2 of these and one topaz:)

My cattle have broken most other types of valves for stock tanks. This one is under the water and they do not bother it. I put the hose side against a fence or under a hot wire and there is zero chance of cattle breaking the connection or causing a leak. It also fills the tank significantly faster than most other types since it is a full open valve. I really like these valves and it arrived to my door at $20 less than it costs at the local Co-op.
