Anna Mindness does a fantastic job with this book. There are plenty of resources for both interpreting and ASL students. I truly enjoyed all the wealth of knowledge that she shared with her readers and I learned more about the Deaf community members.

I had to read this book for my interpreting license. As a whole the book was very long and drawn out. It was also somewhat confusing as it continually switched back and forth to the now requirements and the past desired attitude toward interpreters. It was however informative and yes I would recommend it to another sign language interpreter.

I'm not an interpreter, but this book explained the nuances of Deaf culture and how it relates to other cultures. If you skip over the passages specific for interpreting, this is a wonderful resource for oral deaf adults familiarizing themselves with the cultural mores prevalent in the Deaf community.

This book was required for one of the pre-requisites for my interpreter training program. Mindess not only offers an in-depth analysis of Deaf cultural norms, but also helpful insights into the difficulties interpreting between Deaf culture and hearing culture. She does a thorough job describing why successful interpreters need to go beyond fluency in both languages, to an in depth understanding of both cultures. Failing to do so can mean less than complete interpretations, that may result in misunderstandings between consumers, offending each other or even experiencing complete communication breakdown. While this book is geared toward Deaf and hearing cultures, it could also be relevant to the cultural awareness needed to provide a complete interpretation between any two languages.
