This is hardly self start. I'd rather suck out my dirty aquarium water through a straw. To get this going you literally do have to suck it like a straw to start it. So self start is not an accurate description

Makes doing partial changes on my smallest tank a snap. No more cramming my hand in there with my thumb over a tube!

I liked that this gravel vac was small with a low flow suction that allowed me more time to vacuum before the water got too low. However, due to the low flow the suction isnt all that great. Another issue is getting the suction going is a hassle as you have to pump it up and down in the tank to get it going which stirs the debris back into the water. I will continue to use it for now, but I wont be buying another one.

My old gravel vac was a challenge to get started, and often times would stop flowing in the middle of me cleaning the tank. This one is SUPER easy to get going, and has a very smooth and even flow. I love the size of it, It's perfect for cleaning fish food and waste out of my 10 gallon tank. The flow is not too fast, so you can easily pick food up off of the gravel without having to rush. If your tank is 15 gallons or bigger, I'd buy the next size up because this is pretty small. This company, Lee's, makes several sizes, this one being the smallest. I didn't know they made gravel vacs this size. It's so much easier to use and store than my old one was. If you have a 10 gallon or smaller tank, I highly recommend this.

it's well made, but if you're using this on a small aquarium, meaning one with not a lot of depth, the water flow is slow and there's not much suction. I used it on a topfin 2.5 gallon tank and eventually just used a cup since it stopped so often. I'll be looking for one with a pump next.

Small and precise. Great for my 5 gallon, doesn't suck up everything super fast which gives me time to carefully clean the gravel and not suck up baby fish. If you want something fast or large, don't get it. If you want something small and precise this is great.

It isn't bad, but the valve likes to stick. I normally can get it to unstick with a hit or two to the palm, but that isn't working this time. Update: I managed to unstick the valve and now it no longer seals properly. I can still use it if I am quick, but it seems that the valve is poor quality overall.

I don't know how much you can write about a siphon but it works pretty well! perfect size for my ten gallon tank but I would definitely buy a bigger one for any tank bigger than that.

It's ok.... not what I was expecting. Doesn't suck debris up as I thought it would. Instead causes it to float around my tank....

I really like this. I recently redecorated my bettas 5 gallon and this works perfectly to clean the gravel without disturbing the plants as much as the bigger one I have. I didn't really use the self starting option because it seemed to move the water too much and I was making a mess. It's really easier to just submerge the end until you get a flow and submerge it again. Gravel does get sucked up and clogs but only for a second. A little shake is all it takes to clear it. Glad I bought this since water changes will be easier on this tank.

This thing is pretty cool. I have a small betta tank and didn't want to deal with our huge regular aquarium vacuum. It takes some getting used to the pumping part, but once you get it, it works well. I say hooray!

Small sized gravel vac is Perfect for a smaller tank! Probably wouldn't be very efficient for an aquarium larger than a 20 high but for common 10 gallon tank? Just right. This siphon hose is several years old now and still going strong! No cracking plastic, no mold/mildew, and still transfers water like a dream. After awhile the large uptake cylinder is notorious for not fitting tight enough in the blue housing to maintain the siphon when the water level of the tank drops below that blue housing, (as during a 30 or greater water change) and loss of suction means the water change is pretty much over with that now aged tube. However, I think Lee's has changed their material of this product. I've used this gravel vac religiously and have yet to experience what used to be standard defect for them. It's been a couple years now, still perfect! I'm happy.
