installs easilly after drain plug is removed. keeps tank ice free, even during single diget temps. saves.tjme and keeps nice drinkable water for the livestock,24 hrs. a day. rubbermaid heaters will work for several years when used and maintained properly.

I was worried about the leaking around the connection that I had read but with the proper tools was able to tighten it right the first time. No problem with water being too warm, keeps it cool. Electricity usage appears minimal although I am only using it at night right now and our New England winter has been mild so far. Design keeps it away from my curious horses. Only complaint is the short cord.

Date Added: Monday 03 December, 2012 far! At this time of year here in northern New Mexico, we usually have sunshine during the day with 55-ish+ degrees, but freezing temps (sometimes way below 30 degrees) every night. Judging from the frozen solid blocks of ice in my dog's outdoor water dish and the hoses I neglected to drain, that is exactly what's happening. The 70-gallon stock tank at the entrance to my horses' shelter has been totally liquid each morning so far. I judge its temp to be warm-to-cool.I strongly recommend the thermostat add-on (it plugs into the outlet between it and the heater cord) and a GFI.

This is my second tank heater. I used the first one for two years in one of my paddocks through some cold Vermont winter nights. I just bought a second one to replace an old heater (of a different type)that died in December. I recommend this product and the company.

Using the product to keep a 100 gallon tank open. Have had trouble in the past with two other de-icers tripping the GFCI. The other two de-icers were either floating type or convertable floating/drain plug type. The Farm Innovators product has worked well so far in below zero weather. It does not trip the GFCI, no doubt because the cord doesn't touch the water. This isn't rocket science, it just took me a while to find a heater that was designed to keep the cord dry.

Confusingly this unit shipped with a flyer from the manufacturer offering to sell me a thermal cube to turn the unit on at 40 degrees and below, but this unit already does that.It is a perfect fit for our Rubbermaid stock tank, unlike the 'universal' unit we replaced. The element is kept away from our inquisitive horses with no risk of it being pulled from the tank. When installed, you lose the ability to use a drain valve to empty the tank. We bought a replacement drain valve STOCK TANK DRAIN PLUG - Gray and drilled a hole on the other side of the tank so we can still easily empty the tank.
