Shipped as expected and delivered much earlier! This is a fabulous book; illustrations are a bit bizarre and unsettling, so I just ignore most of them. The graphs are very good. And the written content is wonderful. I am recovering from a destroyed nerve injury in my foot and now much better understand *why* there is tingling and sometimes pain. My first PT didn't understand nerve injury and aggravated it by being too aggressive. Now I have an exceptional PT who understands pain and who recommended this book. We are slowly and gradually raising the threshhold of activity, and I am thrilled to be making such great progress after being in an orthopedic boot for 5 months. I'm not any longer on pins and needles waiting in fear for some pain or tingling to happen unexpectedly. I just take it in stride and understand this is part of the recovery. I am so grateful for this approach to pain - have weaned off neurontin very quickly as well - another part of reprogramming your brain about pain.

Great book for explaining how we perceive pain to non scientific people. I haven't used it outside of school to be honest.

It is more simple Regan I thought. I knew it was not written for professionally sanitary staff but anyway .... It is a goos book with entertaining illustrations.

I can't recommend this book enough! I was suffering from what was becoming chronic pain (3+ months) plus recurring back pain for 11 years. At that time I was desperate; I never suffered for that long and so much. I researched the internet for an explanation, all I found were negative and pesimistic views on the subject, no solutions but surgeries or putting up with it. For someone with chronic pain who doesn't need surgery but still experiences constant pain not knowing the true reason, this book is invaluable and a must read. After searching the net for days on end, I came across Lorimer Moseley's explanation on youtube and went straight to buying this book. Not only it is very easy to understand, short and very well researched, but it gives you tools to deal with your problem. It's such a positive book and has helped me through very tough times. I had recurrences and I almost forgot everything I learned, but re-read it and remembered persistence, patience and a way out. If you suffer from chronic pain and don't understand what's happening to you, it's likely doctors haven't given you this information (probably they don't know it!) and you need to read this book. I repeat, it is scientific, it is very well referenced and researched but it is easy to understand and it will explain pain to you.

I like the way this information is presented so it's understandable to non-medical professionals. I bought this book at the suggestion of my physical therapist due to my chronic pain issues. I do wish it were more affordable so it could be shared with more people. IT's very expensive - it not for that, I would buy some additional copies for some family members and friends...I believe the methods suggested and explanations for pain are helping me to cope with my chronic pain. I hope to continue toimprove.

A single page in "Explain Pain" was enough to justify the price that I paid for the book. It told me that nerve damage in the back can cause swelling in the foot, and told me how it does it. When a nerve pinch sends pain signals up to the central nervous system, it also sends nerve impulses down to the terminal ends of the nerve fibers, where inflammatory chemicals are released, causing neurogenic inflammation.Two years ago, the piriformis muscle in my right buttock went into spasm to help stabilize my right sacroiliac joint. It pinched my sciatic nerve, which caused referred pain in my right leg below the knee. This is called Piriformis Syndrome. During the last two years, my right leg has also been swollen below the knee. Before I read "Explain Pain", I did not know that my edema and my referred pain had a single cause, but now I know that I can't get rid of the edema until I get rid of the nerve pinch.This was a great surprise for me, because I have never seen any indication in Piriformis Syndrome case histories that edema is an essential part of Piriformis Syndrome. However, if doctors do not know that edema and referred pain have the same cause, they will not report edema as part of a Piriformis Syndrome case history.

Explain Pain helped me to better understand the mechanism of pain and how pain messages can be blocked or reduced through our thought processes, exercise and nutrition. Though it does get pretty technical, at times, that information was necessary in order to understand how to pain can be overcome . I would recommend it to anyone suffering from chronic pain.

I have read the GMI handbook and was leery of getting this one for fear it wasn't new info. But it is a great resource to lend to my patients and yoga clients. An easy read with a lot of science based facts. Thanks guys!

Note that you can buy this book directly from the Australian publisher - it is still quite expensive but very much worth the money - [...] - the publisher - Neuro Orthopaedic Institute (NOI) also conducts education for physiotherapists and medical practitioners around the world -- I've had disabling chronic pain for six years, caused by abdominal surgery which was itself completely successful and healed perfectly. I have been able to slowly increase my activity levels using the principles in this book so that I have at least some semblance of my life back and I am now completely off narcotic painkillers (except for the odd flare-up). But I didn't find the book to be quite enough and so I found a physiotherapist who is knowledgeable about the main principle in the book -- graded exposure. There are many physiotherapists in Australia and elsewhere who have been trained by NOI. In Australia, major hospitals also have pain management training programs for patients which teach some of the concepts (with varying success). Where the book is a tiny bit lacking is in more examples of how to make up your own program, what to do if you get a flare-up, etc.

An incredibly up to date, informative and useful book. As a health professional and a chronic pain sufferer this aide with be used for myself and my clients. Written for the lay person as well as for health professionals of all areas dealing with pain issues; very understandable with excellent and effective management tool choices described and explained. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in pain! The only suggestion I have is that it could be available as an ebook.
