All while sticking to the budget friendly sensibility that makes Dayton Audio a true value. This attractive 2-way speaker featuring dual 4\" woofers and a 3/4\" tweeter all packed into precision engineered transmission line enclosures will make many rethink their concept of what a budget speaker system is capable of. Great for music reproduction or even creating a complete timbre matched home theater setup; just add a pair of MK402 bookshelf speakers, an MK442 center channel and a powered subwoofer like our SUB-1500. Superior Sound Through Engineering The MK442Ts utilize a quarter wave transmission line enclosure. This proven loudspeaker technology makes it possible to produce deep articulate bass with smaller drivers and lower profile enclosures. Compared to a traditional bass reflex cabinet a transmission line is able to produce lower bass without the worry of port resonance and turbulence. This means better bass, lower distortion and a smaller footprint. Beauty More than Skin Deep The MK442Ts feature an attractive textured, black vinyl finish that stands out at first glance. The cabinet offers a unique geometric design that offers aesthetics not commonly found in this price range. The grill is removable and made with a high-quality black cloth that discretely obscures the most appealing features of this design, the drivers. Elegant 3/4\" Silk Dome Tweeter The 3/4\" tweeter offers superior off axis response which helps create a large, engaging soundstage. The low mass diaphragm offers an exceptionally flat frequency response. This along with the low distortion neodymium motor system ensures that high frequency content is reproduced as transparently as possible. Impressive Low Frequency Extension from a 4\" Woofer The MK442Ts use the same 4\" treated paper cone woofer as the critically acclaimed MK402 and award winning MK442 speakers. This 4\" treated paper cone woofer boasts a 1\" diameter 4-layer voice coil offering improved power handling and low frequency response. An extended pole piece creates symmetrical magnetic field for lower distortion. The large rubber surround allows for high excursion, all this equates to focused and accurate mid frequencies and impressive low end bass extension. More Than Just a Capacitor The crossover featured in the MK442T utilizes a 3 kHz, 2nd order low pass and a 3rd order high pass section. The board is then affixed to the rear of the recessed terminal cup which features a pair of 5-way gold-plated binding posts. The crossover was designed and optimized to deliver the smoothest, flattest frequency response possible.Dayton Audio is proud to have the MK442T honored as . I was immediately impressed but discovered some terrible distortion in the lower midrange. It was that bass sax growel distorrting and on one speaker only. My first thought was a defective midrange. Further examination, I found the speaker screws were loose. I carefully tightened all screws and no distortion. The boxes were factory sealed and perfect. The speakers had to have come from the factory with loose drivers. I think the high end. Is a little harsh. I am 74 so it could be me. If you are tired of those earbuds and headphones, like me, buy these, You won't be disappointed,

This speaker has a warmth I did not expect from the size of the woofers. Cleanest I have ever heard.

These are some of the warmest sounding speakers i've heard. Rich midrange. They are not for extracting every bit of detail out of the music. The high end is VERY polite. They cause no listening fatigue, unless you listen at high volumes. Instead of being a lively, dynamic speaker that really gets in your face, the music tends to gently wash over you from all directions. It's a pleasant experience in my opinion. I own 3 different sets of Wharfedales, which are known for their warm sound, and I think these go even farther in that regard. Yes the bass is deep and punchy but they still need a sub to cover the lowest lows. Don't buy them if you like a Klipsch type sound, or you will be sending them back. Hope I could be of some help. Update 12/26/21: So I was starting to think these sounded a little too polite, bordering on dull and lacking energy, especially when bringing my Polk Tsi300's back out and hooking those up. The Polks sounded much brighter in comparison, in the high end. Cymbals and stringed instruments had that nice shimmer to them that I was missing in the Daytons. But as I listened to the Polks for a while one thing stuck out. The Polks, while producing a nice soundstage, are VERY finicky about placement. Placed too wide apart (i'm talking inches here) and you can hear each speaker individually. Placed too close together (again, inches) and the stereo image collapses. I found myself getting up every 2 minutes and adjusting the space between them until i got it just right. I did not have to do that with the Daytons. They throw such a huge wide sound (in a medium sized room) that you don't have to get them 'just right' to have a great sound stage and stereo image. This may be due to the 'transmission line' cabinet design. I think what this design effectively does is put a millisecond delay on the sound as it has to travel through the cabinet before it exits out the front facing bottom port, thus giving the illusion, whether real physics or not, that the speaker is throwing out a wide soundstage. The sound just fills the room from all directions as if you are listening to a 5.1 system, but without all the extra speakers and wires cluttering up the room. These things are an absolute steal at this price. I've listened to speakers that cost 5x this much that don't sound as rich and pleasing to the ear as these. At this price I recommend getting a pair just to swap them out for your current speakers just to mix it up on occasion. Final update 6/26/22 These things just get better with time. They are fully broke in now and the woofers sound so much better than they did a few months ago. Drums warm and punchy? Yes. 80's synth bass smooth and deep? Yes. Cymbals and vocals shimmery (is that a word?) at the top end without being shrill? Yes. These produce a wonderfully flat and uncolored sound. I've been listening to CD's only through them and I must tell you they sound as close to an LP as you can get sans the hiss, crackles and pops. If you're curious what i'm powering them with (of course you are that's why you're reading this review) for the amp section it's an Arcam SA20 power amp rated at 80 true watts per channel, so i'm hitting them with the max (RMS, not peak) power they can handle but it sounds so smooth and effortless. For the CD deck it's a matching Arcam CD50 CD player. Interconnect cables are a pair of Audioquest 'chicago' rca's, and 12 gauge speaker wire with 'banana' connectors. . Also running a Klipsch 10'' subwoofer.. I swap out these speakers every once in a while with a different brand and always end up coming back to these. I'm just hooked on that flat, uncolored sound that makes you want to listen to music for hours, not minutes. Very non fatiguing to listen to. Highly recommended. Hope I was a help in your decision making. Enjoy the music..........

I've been a huge fan of Dayton Audio ever since I bought a T-amp back in college. To that point, I had no idea how 'clean' a small amplifier could sound. Doing more research about the brand, I learned that the KLH subwoofer that I'd had for years that never failed to impress was actually a re-badged Dayton Audio subwoofer. I ventured into their speakers with the B652s. They didn't blow me away, but when they introduced the B652s with the ribbon tweeters.. now THAT was a great budget speaker (so good and so affordable, in fact, that I've purchased several more pairs and even have an unopened pair in storage should I find another use). Whenever Dayton reveals a new product, they have my full attention. To me, their performance and value is unmatched. When the MK series came out, I purchased the bookshelf models to use on my desk. I don't normally put much faith in the 'break in' period, but they went from decent to very fun to listen to over the course of a few weeks. When I bought my house and wanted small-ish speakers for my living room, these were a no-brainer. Just like with the bookshelf MKs, I wasn't immediately impressed. My expectations with Dayton are always high, I figured I was just being unreasonable. But a few weeks later I realized that these are damn-good speakers and a total joy to listen to. As others are saying, they produce impressive deep bass for their size. I choose not to run these with a subwoofer as I find the output completely satisfactory for my great room. The mids are perfectly balanced. I initially found the bookshelf speakers kind of shy and recessed-sounding as it pertains to the mids, but these have the perfect presence, perfectly suitable for both music and movies. The treble is very smooth and detailed as well. I honestly didn't want to like these tweeters because I was upset that they didn't use a more novel technology (e.g. ribbon tweeters), but they're great. Dispersion and imaging are superb.I consider these 'frustratingly good' because my Martin Logan Motion 12s that I bought years ago, loved, and am using in my home theater downstairs? Yeah, I find these Daytons every bit as pleasing to listen to (just in slightly different ways.. the Daytons are less 'in your face,' for one example). Dayton speakers tend to be so good that you regret spending more on speakers you once thought the world of. Peak performance per dollar. If you're seeking super-accurate, reference-quality sound (which I've had and is, if you ask me, overrated), you may benefit from spending more money. But if you're looking for very detailed, pleasing sound, I think these speakers set the bar for the law of diminishing returns.. you'll have to spend a LOT more money to get noticeably better performance, and to most people, it just won't be worth it.There is one exception, however: these are small speakers, and while they're capable of playing plenty loud enough for 99 of people, bigger speakers will handle the highest SPLs with more grace. If you're looking for front-row rock-concert loudness, you're going to need a more robust speaker. But otherwise, these are an incredible pick! Very highly recommended!
