You can get away with using one of the cheap cleat remover/installers. I know because I did for years. But for 11 bucks this makes it SOoo much faster and easier. I will say that the ripper piece is made for the Softspike cleat design specifically so if you use a different style of cleat it won't be perfect but really it just rips them out anyway. Like I said, this makes changing cleats so easy it's worth 11 bucks.

I like this for both removing and installing cleats. The bit with teeth really take out worn out cleats that other wrenches I had would not remove. The two prong bit has longer prongs than most other wrenches which seems to help when either removing or installing a cleat.
