It has two separate gradient layers for higher particle reduction efficiency and dirt-loading capacity than standard spun or string-wound cartridges. The nominal filtration rating of the pre-filter layer is 50 microns, and the rating of the post-filter layer is 5 microns. The filter is made of spun polypropylene fibers for resistance to chemicals and bacteria. It has an initial pressure drop of less than 1 pound per square inch (psi) at a flow rate of 20 gallons per minute (gpm), and operates over a temperature range of 40 to 145 degrees F (4.4 to 62.8 degrees C). This spun polypropylene filter cartridge meets National Sanitation Foundation/American National Standards Institute (NSF/ANSI) standard 42 for quality assurance, and is used for treatment of residential, commercial, and municipal drinking water.SpecificationsNominal filtration rating (pre-filter) 50 micronsNominal filtration rating (post-filter) 5 micronsInitial pressure drop at 20 gpm <1 psiTemperature range 40 to 145 degrees F (4.4 to 62.8 degrees C)Maximum dimensions (H x W) 20 x 4-1/2 inches (508 x 114 mm)Materials certification NSF/ANSI standard 42The nominal filtration rating is for a particle removal efficiency of 85%.H is height, the vertical distance from lowest to highest point; W is width, the horizontal distance from left to right; D is depth, the horizontal distance from front to back.Water filters remove undesirable particles, chemicals, and microorganisms from water by means of a semipermeable barrier, adsorption, or biological processes. This is the first time I have used this design but I have high hopes. The paper ones are terrible!!

they work very well in a place where there is a lot of sediment in a water catchment system, as the 50-micron filter takes out most of the large particleS thatwould stop up a straight 5-micron cartridge. This one lasts 3 months, versus 1 for a straight 5 micron

Installed in my big blue (whole house) water filter
This 1st stage filter is the primary sediment filter.
Should have done this 20 years ago.

This filter removes particles from our well water that made the water taste bad before installing the filter system. It lasts 6 months before needing replacement. Keeps our salt based water treatment system cleaner.

Tip: Try cutting open a used cartridge lengthwise using a utility knife to see how far the particles penetrated the filter media. The particles in our well water were caught in the 50 micron outer layer but did not get through the 5 micron inner layer. This gives you an idea of how often to change the filter as well.

I've been using a standard string wound 20 micron filter which lasts about a year with my well and those get most of the rusty orange sediment.<br />Saw these on sale for half price and decided to give the poly spun depth filters a try since I was overdue for a filter change.<br />Theoretically these could last twice as long as string wound single gradient filters but I'm not sure what size sediment is in my well water.<br />If the 5005 filter all the way down to 5 microns they might take the load off my more expensive carbon block filters for a year or more.

Love this filter, I had a huge iron problem of at least 2.5ppm and this has taken care of most all issues. I have &#34;Rusco 1-1/2-250-F Polyester Screened Spin-Down Filter System&#34; that catches more clay than iron so this 5005 is really the first filter and it really does work. After one day I took the filter out and could shake the iron/rust off the outside of the filter. The inside core only had small spots of red. My water then passes through a 1micron and then a carbon filter. I'm glad I did a 3 filter set up so I don't have to worry about the expensive filters getting clogged and these cheap ones are doing a great job themselves.
