Large filter housing for 4.5 inch x 20 inch filter. I used two of these for whole house filtration with a 75-25 micron filter and a 25-1 micron filter.I would suggest using pipe dope (non hardening paste) to seal fittings. I first tried using 6 wraps of Teflon tape, and the fittings dripped slightly. This is the Original, name brand version of the Big Blue Filter.

I use this with a sediment filter to protect some equipment at my job. Recently my mom was complaining about the taste of her tap water and about the cost of filters for her refrigerator. I bought one of these Big Blue units, a mount, and an activated charcoal filter. With this plumbed in at the main water line, the whole house can benefit from the odor and foul taste reduction. The 20 inch filter is overkill, but I am curious to see how long it lasts. A really great purchase!

I like these housing units and have two of them, but it can be a bit tricky to re-assemble after replacing the cartidge. I have found that it is essential to completely lubricate the o-ring and the threads, otherwise the seal is poor and there is a lot of leaking after the water is turned back on. I think in our case we have a lot of iron in the water, which adheres to the o-ring and makes it bind when screwing the blue housing back into the top part of the filter. If the o-ring becomes distorted, it does not seal well. The recommended silicone lubricant is expensive and hard to find. I have been using petroleum jelly (less than $2 for a big jar at any drug store) with no issues. For me at least, there was no need to lubricate on first use, as the o-ring was new and clean. But on two subsequent occasions when I tried to replace the filter cartridge and didn't bother to lubricate, I had a very difficult time getting it to re-seal. Lubrication resolves this difficulty completely.

I have a water well. The water has small traces of sediment (sand) . I use 2 of these units in line before the water goes into my house. The first unit has a 75 to 25 ppm filter. The second unit down stream from the first unit has a 75 to 5 ppm filter. Collectively, I am very pleased with the water clarity. The "blue" outer housing is required when exposed to the sun. DO NOT USE A CLEAR outer housing.

Product did not come with mounting bolts to attach to filter bracket. No instructions as to what to use. I'm at a stand still.
That's the only reason for a 4 star rating.

Small filter, big results. Use this with the refillable canister and DYI water conditioning for the whole house. My recommendation is to use some silicone grease to condition the o-ring inside every time you do a filter change/recharge. Has a pressure relieving button so it is easy to break the vacuum when changing out filters. Great product and will fit the 20" filter canister as well.

This is a good replacement filtration unit. If used in a new application - you would need to fabricate your own mounting plate.

This was a challenging canister to seal. The 1" connections required an insane amount of teflon tape to seal- even then I had to utilize food grade grease to keep from seeping. Main plastic canister also required grease to keep from dripping as well. I have a couple kenmore canisters that I have used that did not require all of this grease and tape to seal.

I can't say it is a terrible product because once it is sealed up it does its job just fine, just annoying to seal... definitely start the job with grease and plenty of teflon tape. I started with just tape and had to run out to a hardware store to find food grade grease (next to thread tape and pipe dope in most stores).

Update 10/12/2017:
I figured out what was wrong. There was a UPC barcode label stuck under the threads. My only issue with the unit is that the threaded in/out fittings aren't uniform. I was able to screw the fitting further into one side than the other.

Update 10/12/2017:
Something odd is going on. Doing some research, the filter for this housing should be 9 3/4" long. But my measuring tape is showing 10" long. How is this possible? This is probably why my housing is leaking! The filter I bought from Pentek is TOO LONG!

Small leaks around threaded in/out fittings. I'm working to fix the leaks. In order to stop major leaking from where the blue housing threads into the black top, I had to use a TON of silicone. Applying a 'small amount' on the o-ring' created a flood. I had to fill the trough where the o-ring sits with silicone and push the o-ring down into the bed of silicone. Im still trying to figure out if this is normal from other buyers.
I tried several different methods. 1) small amount of silicone, 2) hand tightened, 3) used wrench to tighten... all led to major leaks. The only way to stop it from leaking was to apply a TON of silicone.

I have no clue how other buyers were able to get a tight seal by only using 'small amounts' of silicone.

See attached image for the directional spray of water on the wall prior to using more silicone. Ill update this review if I can get all leaks to stop.

My experience is that you normally wrap teflon tape around threads 2-3 times to ensure a leak free connection in plumbing. I tried that with this filter and it leaked a lot at both of the pipe connections. I wound up putting over 10 wraps of teflon tape around the threads and now it only has a very slight leak on one side. The leak at the other side stopped. These plastic threads have some significant problem because I can't get a water tight seal at the pipe connection. I can't tighten it any more because the fittings are screwed all the way in to the filter. Maybe I'm supposed to use 20 wraps of teflon tape? Also, the holes at the top to mount it in the optional bracket are not threaded, so I had to thread those holes to accept the bolts that mount it to the optional bracket. Good thing I had a tap and die set. It does filter the water though, so I'll give it 3 stars. You just have to leave a bucket under it to catch the drips.

Good filter, volume is excellent, but I'm giving only 4 stars as this needs the wrench to keep it from leaking at the seal.... it should be included!

Add a wrench for a few dollars more.
