I did not realize that the wood portion was not split, but is a fixed size. However, for the price, I suppose that's not surprising. I prefer show trees that will expand appropriately in whatever shoe they're used for. Still, this is a nice unit, and the heel portion is actually better than many others I've used. It does not appear to grab the top rim of the leather at the back of the shoe, and it comes out very easily.

I bought 6 pairs of these and I do not regret it for one minute. These are really excellent quality and exactly what I was looking for. The cedar is good quality and helps with odor. The spring loaded back is really easy to slip in and out of the shoe. I wear 9.5 wide and these really fit the bill.
